Increase Vinh airport capacity to 14 million passengers/year

According to the Vinh airport planning just approved by the Minister of Transport , the airport's capacity will increase to 8 million passengers/year by 2030 and 14 million passengers/year by 2050 instead of 2.8 million passengers/year as present.

Specifically, the planning of Vinh international airport (commonly known as Vinh airport, Nghe An province) for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, identifies the following goals:

In the period of 2021-2030, Vinh international airport will have a level 4E airport (according to the standard code of the International Civil Aviation Organization - ICAO); capacity of about 8 million passengers/year and 25,000 tons of cargo/year.

During this period, Vinh airport operated code C aircraft such as A320, A321 and equivalent, code E aircraft such as Boeing B747, B777, B787, Airbus A350 and equivalent.

By 2050, Vinh airport will still be level 4E, but its capacity will be increased to about 14 million passengers/year and 35,000 tons of cargo/year; meeting the exploitation of aircraft types as in the 2021-2030 period.

To meet the above capacity, in the 2021-2030 period, the existing runway (2,400m long, 45m wide) of Vinh airport will be extended to 3,000m x 45m; 2 parallel taxiways and a system of connecting taxiways and synchronous quick-exit taxiways will be added to increase operating capacity; the existing aircraft parking lot will be expanded to accommodate about 15 parking positions for code C aircraft; and the aircraft parking lot in the T2 passenger terminal area will be planned to accommodate about 10 aircraft parking positions.

Vision to 2050, planning runway No. 2 with dimensions of 3,000m x 45m to the east of the existing runway; planning parallel taxiway No. 3 about 180m west of the center of runway No. 2.

At the same time, plan a synchronous system of connecting taxiways and rapid exit taxiways to connect parallel taxiways with runways and parking lots; expand the aircraft parking lot in the T2 passenger terminal area to accommodate about 29 aircraft parking positions; reserve for expansion when needed.

Vinh Airport Air Traffic Control Tower will be newly built at the north location of T1 passenger terminal, with an area of about 2 hectares.

In the 2021-2030 period, the existing T1 passenger terminal (current capacity of 2 million passengers/year) will be expanded to a capacity of about 5 million passengers/year; a new T2 passenger terminal will be planned in the area between the two runways with a capacity of about 3 million passengers/year.

Vision to 2050 will expand passenger terminal T2 to a capacity of about 9 million passengers/year, raising the total capacity of Vinh international airport to about 14 million passengers/year; reserve land for development when needed.

In the 2021-2030 period, the existing cargo terminal at Vinh airport will continue to be maintained; a cargo terminal will be planned in the area north of passenger terminal T1, with a capacity of about 25,000 tons/year. The vision to 2050 will be to expand the cargo terminal and parking lot to meet a capacity of about 35,000 tons/year; land will be reserved for development when needed.

The plan also aims to expand and build facilities for gathering, repairing, and maintaining aviation vehicles and equipment, non-aviation service facilities, and other facilities... corresponding to the capacity of Vinh International Airport.

Land use demand for the period 2021-2030, vision to 2050 of Vinh international airport is about 543.53ha (increase of 96.5ha), including: 262.708ha managed by civil aviation, 238.838ha managed by the military and nearly 50ha of shared land.

The Minister of Transport requested the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam to preside over and coordinate with the People's Committee of Nghe An province and relevant agencies to organize the announcement, management and implementation of the planning of Vinh international airport according to regulations.

Nghe An Provincial People's Committee is responsible for reviewing and updating the above planning contents into local planning and related planning; arranging and protecting land funds in accordance with approved planning.
