Iron-rich red meat may promote hair growth in people who are deficient in the nutrient.

According to experts, in cases of reversible hair loss, people need to supplement the following nutrients:

Protein

Hair is mainly made up of the protein keratin. Therefore, getting enough protein can help promote hair growth. To get enough protein, the body will need at least 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. Foods rich in protein include lean meat, eggs, milk, and beans.

Additionally, some studies show that fish protein supplements may limit hair loss and increase hair thickness in women with thinning hair.

Zinc

Low zinc levels can cause a type of hair loss called telogen effluvium. This condition is often reversible. Some research suggests that just 50 mg of zinc per day can help improve hair loss in women. Foods rich in zinc include oysters, beef, chicken, dark chocolate, and beans.

Iron

Iron is a mineral that is essential for cell division, helping cells divide more quickly, including hair follicle cells. Low iron levels can lead to a variety of health problems, such as pale, sallow skin, brittle nails, and hair loss.

Adult men should consume at least 8 mg of iron per day. Meanwhile, women aged 19 to 50 need at least 18 mg per day, and women over 51 need 8 mg per day.

People can get iron through food or iron supplements. Foods rich in iron include red meat, liver, shellfish, beans, quinoa and spinach.

Selen

Interestingly, both a deficiency and excess of selenium can cause hair loss. The recommended daily intake of selenium for adults is 55 micrograms per day. Foods rich in selenium include seafood, eggs, meat, brown rice, sunflower seeds, and cottage cheese, according to Verywell Health .
