MU brings former Man City player to lead youth training

Manchester United have officially found a replacement for Nick Cox as academy director, following his move to Everton in June.

Torpey is considered a leading youth football coach.

The chosen figure is Gareth Torpey, a youth coach who has been associated with Liverpool, Manchester City and most recently Brentford.

Torpey joins United as the club undergoes a rebuilding phase under director of football Jason Wilcox, who worked with him at Man City. Wilcox has praised Torpey's youth development record, stressing that he has been instrumental in developing many of England's top talents.

Torpey spent six years in Liverpool's youth system before moving to Man City in 2014, where he rose to become head of academy coaching. In January 2024, he accepted the job of managing Brentford's academy and will continue to complete his duties there before officially moving to Carrington.

Speaking after his appointment, Torpey affirmed that he was proud to have the opportunity to lead the most famous academy in England. He committed to continuing the "young blood" tradition of MU, creating a generation of players who both develop personally and have the courage to compete for major titles with the first team.

Torpey's arrival is expected to help the Old Trafford academy continue to be the cradle that produces bright stars for world football.
