(Baothanhhoa.vn) - Thuong Ninh was established on the basis of merging 3 communes: Thuong Ninh, Cat Van, Cat Tan. This is a locality with a large mountainous area, the main production land is steep hills, the people's livelihood has long depended mainly on rice, cassava, corn and acacia. The locality has a low starting point, infrastructure still has many difficulties, but thanks to the determination to innovate the agricultural structure, Thuong Ninh is gradually introducing high-value crops into production, creating a clear shift for the local economy.

With a population of more than 12,000, mainly ethnic minorities, the lives of the people of Thuong Ninh previously faced many difficulties, with fragmented cultivated land and low productivity. In response to the requirements of innovation, the Party Committees of the three old communes: Thuong Ninh, Cat Van, and Cat Tan focused on leading and directing the introduction of valuable crops such as hybrid corn, vegetables, medicinal plants, and fruit trees suitable for the soil into intensive cultivation. Therefore, Thuong Ninh's agricultural production has achieved many important results, with stable food output of over 7,500 tons/year; product value per hectare of cultivated land reaching 84 million VND, an increase of 14 million VND compared to 2020; the area of ​​planted forests and production forests is increasingly expanding, ensuring a coverage of more than 57%. Notably, the commune has converted 128 hectares of ineffective agricultural land to grow crops of higher economic value, initially forming commodity production models, bringing about efficiency.

However, looking directly at reality, the production scale is still fragmented and small; the added value per unit area is not commensurate with the potential; the crop structure is not really reasonable, slow to adapt to market fluctuations. Agricultural products often depend on traders, lacking sustainable linkages in production and consumption. In that context, the Party Committee of Thuong Ninh commune has determined that transforming the crop structure associated with land accumulation, applying science and technology , and developing large-scale commodity agriculture is a strategic and inevitable direction to increase income and improve people's lives.

Grasping the general development trend, the 1st Congress of the Party Committee of Thuong Ninh commune, term 2025-2030, identified the conversion of crop structure associated with land accumulation, application of high science and technology, and promotion of large-scale commodity production as strategic directions during the term. With the goal set for 2030, converting 239 hectares of agricultural land area applying high technology. To realize the set goal, the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of the commune has directed the People's Committee of the commune to focus on developing an action program, focusing on converting ineffective rice-growing land area to crops of high economic value, suitable for the soil and market demand such as hybrid corn, vegetables, medicinal herbs, fruit trees, etc. At the same time, forming specialized production areas, associated with OCOP products, aiming to build a typical agricultural product brand of Thuong Ninh commune.

Comrade Nguyen Huu Tuat, Secretary of the Party Committee of Thuong Ninh commune, emphasized: With a new development mindset, transforming from "self-sufficiency" to "commodity production", breaking the fragmented, small-scale production, moving towards building a modern commodity agriculture, the Party Committee, government and people of Thuong Ninh need to have political determination into concrete actions. Each cadre and party member must be exemplary in applying technical advances, converting crops, and developing household economy. Each village and each cooperative must be a nucleus in the conversion movement, building effective models for replication. Taking income increase and life improvement as the measure of development. The consistent goal of crop conversion is to increase income and improve people's lives. Because economic development does not stop at numbers, but must be measured by the quality of people's lives, from spacious houses, clean concrete roads, to full meals and children being able to study in the best conditions.

To realize this goal, the Commune Party Committee is directing the Commune People's Committee to develop an action program to attract enterprises and high-tech agricultural cooperatives to invest in mechanization services, reduce production costs, and improve the competitiveness of agricultural products. Promote digital transformation in agricultural production management, apply information technology to forecast the market, and trace the origin of products. Along with that, promote the construction of a chain from production - processing - consumption, encourage enterprises and high-tech agricultural cooperatives to invest in mechanization, reduce costs and improve the competitiveness of agricultural products.

Believing that, from the hills of Thuong Ninh in the future will become a hill area specializing in sustainable commodity crops, so that "the land never sleeps, people never stop getting rich" becomes a reality, contributing to affirming the new vitality of a mountainous commune that is changing every day.
