Mexico ready to accept foreigners deported by the US

Công LuậnCông Luận06/01/2025

(CLO) Mexico has opened the possibility of receiving non-Mexican migrants deported by the US. Previously, the country had asked President-elect Donald Trump to directly repatriate these people to their country of origin.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum affirmed at a press conference on January 3 that in case the US does not return migrants to their country, Mexico can cooperate through various mechanisms.

Without giving details, Mexico could restrict admissions to certain nationalities or ask the U.S. for financial assistance to repatriate migrants from Mexico to their home countries. President Sheinbaum stressed that Mexico does not support mass deportation policies, but has prepared plans to handle the situation properly.

Trump’s deportation policies have caused problems in his first term. Thousands of asylum seekers have been forced to wait in Mexico in unsafe conditions, making them easy targets for criminal gangs in border cities. Others have been sent back to Mexico under public health provisions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In December, Sheinbaum said she would ask the U.S. to repatriate non-Mexican migrants directly to their home countries. However, Mexico is still accepting people from Cuba, Venezuela and other countries that often refuse deportation flights from the U.S.

Mexico has halted repatriations at the end of 2023 due to a lack of funding and a significant drop in deportations in 2024. The Mexican government is also planning to host a meeting of regional foreign ministers to discuss immigration this month.
