Paqueta is expected to help Man City regain their position in the Premier League and Champions League. |
According to The Times , Man City are planning to negotiate with West Ham United and Paqueta's agent. The Brazilian midfielder was targeted by Man City last year, before he was involved in match-fixing allegations. The Etihad Stadium club was ready to pay up to 80 million pounds for Paqueta.
The charges against Paqueta stem from four yellow cards he received in matches between November 2022 and August 2023 - coinciding with irregular betting activity discovered on the Brazilian island of Paqueta, where he was born.
In total, more than £100,000 in winnings were recorded relating to Paqueta’s yellow cards against Leicester, Aston Villa, Leeds and Bournemouth. The FA launched an investigation in mid-2023, and Paqueta was charged in May last year.
After nearly two years of pressure and suspicion, the Brazilian player has been cleared. Last weekend, the Football Association cleared Paqueta of all match-fixing charges in 2023, paving the way for him to return to the transfer market.
West Ham currently value Paqueta at £80m, but Man City are negotiating a lower price. Guardiola rates Paqueta highly, believing the Brazilian's technical qualities and ability to control the game would fit Man City's footballing philosophy.
Paqueta, if he joins Man City, will help the club fill the void left by Kevin De Bruyne, and is also a long-term replacement for Ilkay Gundogan, who is showing signs of aging and is likely to leave the Etihad Stadium next summer.
