Photographer Caspar Siebel captured the unusual leopard hunt in the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, South Africa, Latest Sightings reported on December 27. Siebel, his father and a guide were touring the reserve by car when they spotted the leopard walking along the trail. Realizing that the animal was in hunting mode, the group decided to follow it. After about half an hour, they saw the leopard approaching the warthog's den.

"The leopard was walking around the cave and making a ruckus at the cave exit on the opposite side of us. It was trying to lure the warthog out to the exit closest to us, and that's exactly what happened. The father warthog came out first and then ran as fast as he could into the bushes," Siebel recounted.

The warthog cubs tried to run after their father but couldn’t keep up. When the first cub emerged, the leopard was there and quickly pounced. The second cub also rushed out, but when it saw the predator with its sibling in its mouth, it appeared to freeze in fear, Siebel said.

Leopards usually don’t want to risk losing their prey and will carry it up a tree as soon as they catch it. However, this time things didn’t go that way. The leopard dropped the first prey, knowing it was too badly injured to move, and then quickly grabbed the second cub. Then, the mother warthog also chose the wrong moment to come out from the back. The leopard had now taken down both cubs, and as soon as it heard the mother warthog’s cries, the hunter left the second cub behind and quickly pounced on the last prey.

Leopards ( Panthera pardus ) are found in Africa and Asia. They are opportunistic predators, usually hunting on the ground or in trees. Leopards are good climbers. During the day, they spend most of their time resting under rocks or in shady places among tree branches. At night, they usually hunt instead of sleeping. Their prey includes antelope, deer, wild boar, rabbits, fish, birds and some other creatures.

The common warthog ( Phacochoerus africanus ) belongs to the Suidae family and is found mainly in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite its ferocious appearance, it is a herbivore. It is highly adaptable and can withstand long periods of thirst. The gestation period of female warthog is 5-6 months. They usually give birth to 4 or fewer young at a time. Female warthog will lactate for about 4 months.
