Tornado rips off roofs of 64 houses in Soc Trang

Tornadoes accompanied by heavy rain at the beginning of the dry season caused 64 houses in Nga Nam town, Soc Trang province to have their roofs blown off and be severely damaged.


On the afternoon of December 13, according to information from the Command Committee for Civil Defense, Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of Nga Nam Town (Soc Trang Province), at noon of the same day, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms affected 64 houses in My Quoi and My Binh communes.

According to the functional sector of Nga Nam town, preliminary statistics show that thunderstorms and tornadoes have damaged 64 houses, of which 15 houses collapsed completely, 16 houses had 100% of their roofs blown off, and the remaining houses had their roofs blown off (from 30-70%).

The tornado also injured one person, and knocked down many trees and electric poles, affecting local traffic.

The tornado affected traffic on some routes.

Immediately after the tornado occurred, the Civil Defense, Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue Command of Nga Nam town coordinated with local authorities to organize damage statistics, mobilized nearly 300 people including police, militia and self-defense forces along with local forces to clean up the scene, help people move their belongings and make temporary repairs.

Nga Nam town leaders also promptly went to the scene, directed temporary support for affected households to soon stabilize their lives.

By 3:00 p.m. the same day, local government forces, along with military forces, police, departments, and town agencies, had temporarily repaired the situation, and some roads were able to be reopened to traffic.
