Insomnia at night causes many people to face excessive sleepiness during the day. According to statistics, up to 40% of older adults do not get enough sleep, affecting the heart, blood pressure, blood sugar, mental health and immunity.
To understand the underlying cause of nighttime insomnia that causes excessive daytime sleepiness and the role of diet, researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and five major universities in the US analyzed data from more than 6,071 participants, with an average age of over 48.
Study participants answered questions about daytime sleepiness. Information about diet, sleep, medical conditions such as insomnia, sleep apnea, and sleep duration was also collected. This data was then compared to find a link between blood levels of substances and daytime sleepiness.

Results found that omega-6 fatty acids have the ability to improve sleep quality, thereby reducing daytime sleepiness.
Specifically, people with high blood levels of omega-6s — a type of polyunsaturated fat (PUFAs) — tend to experience less daytime sleepiness.
This result is similar to previous studies, showing that omega-6 fatty acids help improve sleep quality and reduce daytime sleepiness.
