The explosion occurred at the Chinese consulate office in central Mandalay at around 7 p.m. on October 18 (local time), according to Myanmar media.

A Myanmar official in Mandalay confirmed to AFP that there had been "an incident at the Chinese consulate office complex in Mandalay last night".

"No one was injured," the official said, without specifying the nature of the incident.

A grenade was thrown into the complex, which is normally guarded by members of Myanmar's security forces, the Irrawaddy newspaper reported.

Voice of Myanmar reported that an unspecified "explosion" occurred at the Chinese consulate, but did not give details.

The Chinese embassy in Yangon did not respond to AFP's questions. There was no immediate response from Myanmar's military government.

Myanmar armed group seizes another town on highway to China

AFP quoted analysts as saying that China is a key ally and arms supplier to Myanmar's military government, but Beijing also maintains ties with ethnic groups fighting against the military in Shan state in northern Myanmar.

Clashes in Shan state, which borders China's Yunnan province, since June have broken a ceasefire brokered by Beijing in January.

In July, an alliance of ethnic armed groups in Myanmar agreed to extend a ceasefire with the government in Shan state after "pressure" from China, AFP reported, citing a leader of one group in the alliance.

The ceasefire, which has been extended until July 31, comes after recent clashes led to an alliance of three ethnic armed groups in Myanmar known as the "Three Brothers Alliance" seizing territory from the Myanmar military along a strategic highway to China, according to AFP.
