Spread the act of gratitude

The birth of War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27) associated with the revolutionary homeland of Thai Nguyen has become a sacred historical milestone, not only reminding of the sacrifices of generations of heroic martyrs, but also posing a responsibility to today's generation in caring for the lives of those who have contributed to the revolution. From the origin of July 27, the spirit of "drinking water, remembering its source" has been spreading steadily over the years, through practical and meaningful actions.

78 years ago, on the afternoon of July 27, 1947, at Ban Co hamlet, Hung Son commune, Dai Tu district, the first rally to celebrate “War Invalids Day” was held with the participation of 300 delegates. At the ceremony, the Organizing Committee read a letter from President Ho to war invalids nationwide.

In the letter, he wrote: “War invalids are those who have sacrificed their families and blood to protect the Fatherland and protect their compatriots... Therefore, the Fatherland and compatriots must be grateful and help these heroic sons. July 27 is an occasion for our compatriots to show their filial piety, charity and love for war invalids...”.

In July 1955, “National War Invalids Day” was changed to “War Invalids and Martyrs Day”. After the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day (April 30, 1975), July 27 every year officially became “War Invalids and Martyrs Day” of the whole country.

Since then, July 27 has become a sacred occasion of gratitude, with profound political , social and humanistic significance; at the same time, it reminds everyone of the tradition of patriotism, national pride and the responsibility to live, study, work and contribute to build and protect the Fatherland worthy of the sacrifices of previous generations. Although the war has long since ended, the spirit of gratitude is still constantly preserved and spread in today's life.

On the land where War Invalids and Martyrs Day originated, the tradition of “When drinking water, remember its source” is preserved and nurtured through concrete actions. Every year, delegations of Party, State and Thai Nguyen provincial leaders organize incense offering at the 27-7 historical relic site, as a sacred ritual to remind people of the merits of those who have fallen.

Candle lighting ceremonies, journeys to the source, historical propaganda activities, meetings with witnesses... are held regularly, spreading from the province to the grassroots, contributing to fostering morality that has become the backbone of the nation.

In Thai Nguyen, the two words “gratitude” are not only present in words, but are spread by the synchronous and persistent participation of the entire political system. Before the merger, in the period of 2021-2025, the province completed early the plan to support the construction and repair of nearly 2,000 houses for people with meritorious services under the direction of the Government. Each house handed over not only has material value, but also a deep gratitude to people with meritorious services.

After the province's merger, Thai Nguyen continued to mobilize resources and expand support programs to mountainous areas with many difficulties. Following the direction of Provincial Party Secretary Trinh Viet Hung, "The spirit must be higher, the way of doing things must be more creative, the determination must be clearer", many housing projects for people with meritorious services continued to be started and completed on schedule, towards the 78th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day.

Officers and soldiers of the Thai Nguyen Provincial Military Command supported the transportation of construction materials to help people demolish temporary and dilapidated houses.

Not stopping at supporting the right people at the right time, many localities also proactively improve the quality of construction works, ensuring sustainability and convenience.

The Provincial Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee and Fatherland Front Committee of Thai Nguyen province have issued many documents and specific programs to care for the material and spiritual life of people with meritorious services. On that basis, sectors, organizations and localities in the province have simultaneously implemented many practical activities with extensive socialization, supporting war invalids, sick soldiers, relatives of martyrs and Vietnamese Heroic Mothers with all their heart and responsibility.

Every year, on July 27, working delegations from the province and all levels, sectors and localities not only bring meaningful gifts, but also listen, visit and share with those who have sacrificed their blood and bones for the Fatherland. From the handshakes, the questions, the listening and sharing have contributed to fostering the close relationship between the government and the people, between today's generation and those who have made independence and freedom for the country.

Along with that, thousands of gratitude gifts were given to those with meritorious services; many free medical examinations and treatments were organized; activities to renovate cemeteries and care for martyrs' graves were also maintained regularly.

Traditional education has been promoted in schools and mass organizations. Journeys to the source, candle lighting ceremonies at martyrs’ cemeteries, exchanges, meetings with historical witnesses… have contributed to helping the younger generation better understand the value of independence and freedom, deeply understanding that today’s peace is the crystallization of the blood and bones of many generations of fathers and brothers. Every action, no matter how small, is implemented methodically, focused and widely spread in the community.

Leaders of the Provincial Labor Federation presented gifts and inspected the progress of the demolition of the temporary house at the home of Mr. Hoang Ngoc Ky, a resistance fighter who was exposed to toxic chemicals, in Na Lan village, Hiep Luc commune.

Showing gratitude to those who have contributed to the revolution is not only a morality that needs to be preserved through every generation, but also a strong bond connecting the past with the present, fostering faith and aspirations for the future. In the revolutionary land of Thai Nguyen, that tradition is being nurtured and continued by synchronous policies, by the cooperation of the entire political system and by the sincere feelings of each citizen.

Each house of love is built, each heart of sharing is spread, all are like solid bridges extending the spirit of gratitude to those who have contributed. And to keep that traditional flame burning brightly, we need to continue to arouse responsibility, creativity and compassion in every action, even the smallest one.

Because gratitude does not stop at words or memorial services, but exists in each specific action, in the way we work together to build a compassionate society, where those who have contributed are always respected, and future generations always know how to be proud, grateful and continue on the path that our ancestors paved with blood and faith.
