Robot performs dental surgery on human for the first time

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí05/08/2024

Perceptive, a Boston-based technology company, has just announced a breakthrough in the field of dentistry when its robot successfully performed a dental procedure on a real patient. This is the first time in the world that a robot has been able to successfully perform this procedure, opening a new era in dental treatment.

Perceptive's robot performed a crown replacement procedure in just 15 minutes, a procedure that typically takes dentists up to two hours.

A dental crown, also known as a dental cap, is a “cap” that is placed over a tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. When cemented into place, a crown can completely cover the part of the tooth above the gum.

“We are thrilled to have successfully performed the world’s first fully automated robotic dental procedure,” said Chris Ciriello, CEO of Perceptive. “This is a medical breakthrough that will improve the precision and efficiency of dental procedures, improving the patient experience.”

Perceptive's dental robotic system is equipped with a 3D camera, using optical tomography technology to build detailed 3D images under the patient's teeth and gums, allowing patients to clearly visualize the condition of their teeth and gums.

Based on 3D images, the artificial intelligence system on the robot will provide analysis and appropriate solutions to perform the procedure on the patient.

"The robotic system has been rigorously designed and tested to ensure that dental procedures can be performed safely, even when the patient is constantly moving," said a representative of Perceptive. "We have a team of highly qualified dentists as consultants to contribute to the development of the robot."

Perceptive's robot is still in development and in order to apply the robot in actual medical examination and treatment, Perceptive will have to apply for a license from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Perceptive representatives said it would take the company about three to five years to obtain this license.

To date, Perceptive has raised $30 million from investors to develop its dental robotics system. Among Perceptive's investors is Edward Zuckerberg, father of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Edward Zuckerberg is a veteran dentist who runs his own dental practice in New York. He is one of the pioneers in using modern technology in dental treatment. Therefore, Edward Zuckerberg's investment in Perceptive shows that he recognizes the potential of the dental robot developed by this company.

The application of robots in medical surgery has made great strides in recent years and many companies are hoping to integrate artificial intelligence into robotic systems so that they can perform surgeries without human intervention.

However, when robots will be able to perform surgery on patients is still an unanswered question as this is an issue that still causes many ethical controversies and has legal barriers.

The most important question is whether patients are willing to let robots perform surgery on them, or do they still trust more highly skilled doctors?
