Lam Dong: Red Journey's volunteer blood supply has decreased sharply

Many people volunteered to donate blood.

The Lam Dong Red Cross mobilized human resources and 50 volunteers from the Red Journey Club - Connecting Love in Lam Dong province to be present very early to organize blood donation activities. Cho Ray Blood Transfusion Center mobilized 32 doctors and 4 vehicles carrying people and medical supplies to receive blood from donors.

Many kind-hearted people traveled long distances to donate blood. Teacher Ho Bao Thi, working at Long Lanh Kindergarten, Lac Duong Commune (Lam Dong) shared: “My three female colleagues and I rode our motorbikes 60 kilometers to donate blood. This is my second time donating blood with the belief that the drops of blood I give will give life to patients.”

Although the organization was very good, many kind-hearted people were willing to share their precious blood with patients, many objective factors affected the voluntary blood donation movement during the summer as well as the Red Journey Program this year 2025 in Lam Dong.

The main activity of the Red Journey Program is to organize the Blood Donation Festival of the Flower City, the largest in Lam Dong, which has been maintained for the past 12 years with results that always meet and exceed the planned targets (from 700 - 1,200 units of blood/session). However, in the 13th session in 2025, the results of the Blood Donation Festival of the Flower City, the Blood Donation Festival, only reached 265 units of blood, a record decrease compared to previous years.

This year's Red Journey program, the unit deployed blood collection in Tay Ninh province (500 units of blood), Binh Duong (1,000 - 1,500 units of blood) to strengthen Cho Ray. Among the 3 localities, Tay Ninh and Lam Dong did not meet the expected target, of which Lam Dong achieved the lowest.

“The demand for blood is very high in the summer, especially this year there is a greater shortage. Every day, an average of 500 units of blood are used at Cho Ray Hospital and neighboring hospitals. Currently, at the Blood Transfusion Center of Cho Ray Hospital, the reserve blood supply for prevention is lacking, only enough for a short time, not meeting the reserve target, if it is long-term, there will be a big shortage,” said Dr. Ngo Le Dai, Blood Transfusion Center of Cho Ray Hospital.

According to Mr. Nguyen Quang Minh, Chairman of the Lam Dong Provincial Red Cross Society, the reason for the decline in voluntary blood donations is that there is no longer a Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation at the district and city levels, so there are many difficulties in mobilizing blood sources. This leads to many difficulties in mobilizing blood sources for medical treatment at hospitals in the province.

This year's Red Journey program in Lam Dong mobilized 2 batches, the first batch of over 200 units of blood was distributed to Lam Dong General Hospital. This second batch only mobilized 265 units of blood to be distributed to Cho Ray Hospital.

The Provincial Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation recommends that local Party committees and authorities pay attention to, consolidate, and improve the Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation at the commune and ward levels. Localities should pay attention to merging and recognizing the grassroots Red Cross to facilitate propaganda, mobilization, and organization of voluntary blood donation to meet the need for blood for patient treatment.
