Raw material forests - "launching pad" for processing industry
After the merger, Thai Nguyen has more than 578,000 hectares of planned forestry land, of which the large timber forest area is expected to reach over 31,400 hectares by the end of 2025. This is a key source of raw materials, ensuring the province's forest product processing industry develops stably and sustainably.
Mr. Nguyen Hai My, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, said: The old Bac Kan province has outstanding forestry potential with 405,000 hectares of forestry land planned for the 2021-2030 period, more than twice that of the old Thai Nguyen province (173,000 hectares). The merger of the two provinces has brought Thai Nguyen a great advantage in developing raw material areas, serving the wood processing industry.
In the 2021-2025 period, the entire Thai Nguyen province (old) has planted 20,800 hectares of concentrated forests, reaching 104.7% of the plan. At the same time, the province effectively implemented the Project to plant 1 billion new trees, with the result of over 1.4 billion trees, equivalent to 202% of the plan.
In particular, Thai Nguyen also focuses on developing large timber forests with green lim, lat hoa, do xanh... species with long exploitation cycles and economic value many times higher than small timber. By the end of 2025, the area of large timber forests is expected to reach over 31,400 hectares, nearly 4.5 times higher than the original plan, of which more than 30,000 hectares will be converted from small timber forests to large timber forests.
In addition, the province encourages people and businesses to change the forest planting model, and at the same time promotes the granting of FSC certification - a "green passport" to help Thai Nguyen's wood products conquer demanding markets such as the US, Japan and the EU.
Mr. Nguyen Kim Quyet, Vice Chairman of Van Han Commune People's Committee, said: The commune currently has 5,500 hectares of forest land. From 2020 to now, the locality has newly planted more than 3,000 hectares, of which over 500 hectares are large timber forests. With 160 households being granted FSC certification, thereby contributing to increasing the value of planted forest wood, expanding access to export markets.
For the Northern region, implementing Resolution No. 10/NQ-TU dated April 22, 2021 of the Bac Kan Provincial Party Committee (old), localities have completed the target of planting 100,000 hectares of forest, with 90% of the exploited output processed on the spot. Thanks to that, it has created sustainable livelihoods for people and provided quality raw materials for the wood processing industry.

Mr. Ly Van Ba, Head of My Vy Village, Thuong Minh Commune, shared: The whole village has more than 300 hectares of forestry land with more than 70 households, each household owns on average 1 to 2 hectares of forest, some households own up to more than 10 hectares. In recent years, thanks to afforestation, the appearance of the village has changed significantly with many spacious houses built thanks to the forest.
Developing diverse and high-quality forest raw materials not only ensures stable growth for the forest products processing industry but also contributes to preserving the “green lung” of the northern mountainous region. This is the foundation for Thai Nguyen to move towards sustainable forest management, developing a modern and environmentally friendly forestry economy.
Aiming to be the wood processing center of the region
Thai Nguyen province not only expands the area of raw material forests but also focuses on enhancing labor potential, improving infrastructure and planning land funds to build concentrated wood processing industrial parks. The whole province currently has more than 860 forest product processing and trading establishments, of which Bac Kan (old) owns 243 establishments, while Thai Nguyen dominates with 618 establishments, including 10 enterprises, 6 cooperatives, 51 companies and 551 households specializing in wooden furniture production.
In recent years, Thai Nguyen has also attracted many large-scale wood processing projects, such as: Dongwha Vietnam Company with an MDF board factory with a capacity of 300,000m³/year and an investment capital of 164 million USD; Hoang Van Thu Paper Company with a capacity of 100,000 tons/year, capital of 599 billion VND; Viet Bac Plywood Company with a capital of over 90 billion VND.
Thanh Binh Industrial Park gathers 4 large wood exporting enterprises: Lechenwood Vietnam Co., Ltd., Govina Investment Joint Stock Company, Hong Ngoc Production and Trading Co., Ltd. and Anh Binh Plywood Co., Ltd.

Thanks to the strong development of the wood processing industry, thousands of workers in the province have stable jobs, with an average income of 6-9 million VND/month. Many enterprises have invested in modern production lines, expanding exports to demanding markets such as the US, EU, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, contributing to enhancing the Thai Nguyen wood brand in the international market.
Ms. Nong Thi Kiem, Lechenwood Vietnam Co., Ltd., said: With more than 372,000 hectares of forest and an exploited output of over 305,000m3, mainly in the northern part of the province, Lechenwood Vietnam Co., Ltd. has invested in production lines for plywood, flooring, etc., mainly exported to the US market. The company's operations create jobs for about 300 workers, mainly local people, with an income of 6-15 million VND/person/month.
The synchronous development of raw materials, infrastructure and human resources has created a solid foundation for the Thai Nguyen wood processing industry. Attracting large-scale projects and expanding exports not only increases product value but also promotes the local economy and improves workers' lives.
Developing FSC-certified raw material areas plays a key role in the strategy of expanding the export market for high-end wood products. Recognizing this, Thai Nguyen province has issued many policies to encourage businesses to closely cooperate with forest growers, ensuring a stable, transparent and long-term sustainable source of raw materials.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Cuong, Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade, emphasized: We coordinate with the agricultural sector to clearly define forest planting areas serving processing factories, and at the same time encourage people to sell wood directly to businesses. This method not only increases product value but also forms a closed, efficient supply chain. Compared to raw round wood, processed wood for export has significantly higher added value.
Sharing the same view, Mr. Nguyen My Hai, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, said: Thai Nguyen province aims to have about 40,000 hectares of forest certified by FSC by 2030, of which the northern region of the province strives to achieve FSC certification with an area of 8,000 hectares by the end of 2025. This is an important basis for the province's planted forest wood to meet the strict requirements on quality and sustainability of international markets.
With the advantage of abundant forest resources, an increasingly complete transport infrastructure system and the experience of traditional craft villages, Thai Nguyen has all the conditions to become the “capital” of wood processing in the midlands and mountainous areas of the North. This development not only creates a strong driving force for local economic growth but also contributes to raising people’s income, while increasing the country’s forestry product export turnover.
