Bulletproof glass, snipers and a series of measures to protect the US election

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên05/11/2024

Increased security in the US has been deployed as American voters go to the polls today (November 5), after earlier threats against election workers.

Some polling stations in cities and rural areas have stepped up security measures, including concrete barriers and locked doors. Some election offices, especially in seven battleground states, have installed bulletproof glass, panic buttons and surveillance cameras to protect workers from violence, Axios reported on November 4.

Poll workers are also trained on how to handle situations in case of tension on election night (morning of November 6, Vietnam time).

State officials have since 2020 increased lines of communication with local law enforcement so they can respond quickly to problems that arise.

The Washington Post reported on November 4 that local officials plan to deploy snipers at key vote counting points, along with using drones to observe the situation.

The National Guard is on standby in Washington, Oregon and Nevada, especially after ballot boxes were burned in Oregon and Nevada. In Colorado, Governor Jared Polis has deployed the National Guard's cybersecurity team, as has Connecticut.

Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes said last week that he regularly wears a bulletproof vest, after receiving threats alleging that he was not running the election fairly.

In Washington, DC, security fences have been erected around the White House, Capitol Hill and the Naval Observatory (where Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris lives). The US Secret Service said that enhanced security measures at the Capitol Hill will be in place until Congress certifies the president-elect on January 6, 2025.

Staffing and security measures have been stepped up amid an unpredictable presidential election and threats against polling station workers.
