Kim Bon strives to reduce poverty

It took us more than 1 hour from the center of Phu Yen commune, passing through steep slopes and many hairpin bends, to arrive at the center of Kim Bon commune. Welcoming us at the commune headquarters, comrade Ha Dinh Hung, Secretary of the commune Party Committee, said: Kim Bon was established on the basis of merging Kim Bon and Da Do communes, mainly inhabited by Muong, Dao and Mong ethnic groups. Infrastructure is still limited, especially the roads from the commune center to the villages are mostly not concreted, making it difficult to travel and transport agricultural products. The economy is purely agricultural, with small-scale production, scattered, and unsustainable; the application of science and technology is still limited, and the quality and competitiveness of agricultural products are low. The commune has not yet formed a chain linking production and product consumption. Currently, the poverty rate is over 40%.

The Commune Party Committee has directed the Commune People's Committee to assess the potential of each village to guide the selection of suitable crops and livestock; to propagate and guide people to apply science and technology in production, contributing to changing farming practices, improving productivity and economic efficiency.

Currently, the commune has 1,307 hectares of grain crops, with an output of 4,602 tons/year; 2,575 hectares of cassava, with an output of 12-15 thousand tons of fresh tubers/year. People have converted part of the ineffective upland land to grow fruit trees, with 224.8 hectares of mango, longan... with an output of 400 tons of fruit/year; growing 55 hectares of vegetables, tubers, and fruits of all kinds. The commune also develops livestock farming in the direction of goods, associated with grass planting, periodic vaccination, and winter food storage; the grass area reaches 321.3 hectares, the total herd of cattle and poultry is more than 91,670.

Mr. Ngo Duc Duong, Chairman of Kim Bon Commune People's Committee, said: Based on the assessment of the existing problems and limitations in local economic development, especially productivity and quality of crops. From there, a plan was proposed to improve each land area and bring suitable crops into production. In addition, with a working-age workforce accounting for about 40% of the population, the issue of job creation for the people will continue to be implemented by the Commune People's Committee in connection with labor-using units inside and outside the province. Currently, the commune has about 300 workers working outside the province with an average income of 7-8 million VND/month, thereby creating more resources for the commune to have the opportunity to escape poverty.

In the 2025-2030 term, the key tasks are to develop technology-based agriculture , cage fish farming and forestry on inefficient sloping land; develop at least one OCOP product from local specialties and establish 1-2 production groups associated with suitable economic models. The commune will exploit resources for economic development, focusing on crops and livestock with advantages, high value and efficiency. Orient agriculture towards commodity production, build effective economic models, improve product quality and value, promote organic production, and apply science and technology. The commune encourages the development of concentrated and specialized production associated with market demand and the development of key products.

We believe that with specific, practical solutions suitable to local conditions, Kim Bon will soon escape from its particularly difficult situation and develop sustainably.
