Encourage people and businesses to be present in cyberspace with the domain name ".vn"

The information and communication infrastructure planning for the period 2021 - 2030 and vision to 2050 defines the development orientation: The domain name ".vn" is a national brand, reaching at least 1 million domain names, accounting for at least 60% of domain names used in Vietnam.

Vietnam ranks first in ASEAN, among the top 10 countries in Asia, and among the top 20-30 countries in the world in terms of domain names by 2025. The Ministry of Information and Communications has assigned the task to the Vietnam Internet Center (VNIC) to develop and popularize the use of the national domain name “.vn”.

At the same time, to promote the popularization of the national domain name “.vn”, the Ministry issued Decision 826/QD/-BTTTT approving the “Program to promote and support people, businesses, and business households to have a reliable and safe online presence with digital services using the domain name “.vn” in provinces and cities across the country in the period of 2024 - 2025”.

National domain names represent national sovereignty in cyberspace. The national domain name “.vn” is not only the online address of individuals, organizations or businesses, but also an important part in building a brand, protecting online brands, and expanding the market. Domain names are also an effective promotional channel, creating favorable conditions for expanding the scale of service provision and business, especially in the context of the market with many online platforms appearing, many businesses have not yet defined the main access channel to build a brand, sustainable and effective online business. Using the domain name “.vn” contributes to affirming cultural identity, increasing consumer trust in transactions in the digital space, helping users easily search and access information quickly and safely.

In the world , in developed countries, the rate of small and medium enterprises having websites is very high. In Europe, in 2023, 70 - 90% of small and medium enterprises have websites. In Vietnam, to date, there are more than 613,000 ".vn" domain names. Of which, businesses registering to use ".vn" domain names have only reached about 25%. According to the 2023 E-commerce Index (EBI) report, businesses with websites only reach 44% (including international domain names and ".vn" domain names).

A representative of the Vietnam Internet Center said that in the digital age, the popularization of the national domain name “.vn” along with “Make in Vietnam” digital services such as websites, online CVs, emails, etc. contributes to the development of the digital economy and digital society in Vietnam. Recognizing the importance of popularizing the domain name “.vn”, the Vietnam Internet Center has been implementing a strategy to encourage individuals, organizations, and businesses to register and use the domain name “.vn”.

In this way, the national domain name “.vn” and digital services promote the sustainable development of the digital economy, contributing to the creation of a diverse, rich and safe society for people.

To popularize the national domain name “.vn”, put the policy into practice, and contribute to supporting people and businesses in the digital environment, it is necessary to implement a comprehensive, nationwide program. Currently, there is a 2-year free incentive for businesses established within 1 year using the domain name “biz.vn” and young citizens, aged 18-23, using the domain name “id.vn” to encourage people, businesses, and business households to have a reliable and safe online presence with digital services using the national domain name “.vn” in provinces and cities across the country.
