Ho khoan is facing the risk of extinction.
The art of singing Ho Khoan, one of the quintessence of Quang Nam folk music, is facing the risk of fading away, as not many people are interested in this genre anymore. Ho Khoan singing now only resounds during festivals, as a way for the older generation to remember their roots, their youthful years filled with memories. But the worrying thing is that the composition team is increasingly scarce, making the vitality of Ho Khoan unable to break through, unable to keep up with the pace of modern life.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Le, Head of the Song Yen Bai Choi Club, shared: “Currently, Ho Khoan singing is mainly preserved through the restoration of traditional festivals. However, there are performers, but there is a lack of composers. Although we have plans to organize a poetry and literature and art composition contest, the number of participants is too small to implement it.” This shows that the vitality of Ho Khoan does not only come from simple lyrics, but also depends on the endless creativity of artists.
In the past, Ho Khoan was a “spiritual medicine” that helped people dispel fatigue after hours of hard work. The dialogues and love songs were not only a connection in work but also an expression of love for life, solidarity and boundless creativity of people.
Nowadays, maintaining Ho Khoan in its original spirit is not easy. However, Ho Khoan is still an important part of the folk music treasure of Da Nang in particular and a valuable intangible cultural heritage of the Vietnamese people in general.
Ho khoan is not only a musical melody but also a factor that connects the community, especially for farmers who work hard all year round. It is the voice of the soul, a relaxation after hours of hard work, a manifestation of cultural behavior towards nature and society. The innocent, rustic songs bring joy, hope and aspiration for a better life.
Ho khoan is also an exchange and connection between people, regardless of their status. The song can start with one person, but the more people participate, the more joyful and bustling it becomes. Everyone can be a performer or an audience member, all blending into the singing, the interesting “game” of response. From there, people express their feelings, aspirations and wishes for a full, happy life, and a bountiful harvest.
In the modern world , Ho Khoan is an attractive spiritual food, however, to preserve and promote its value, we need to continue to nurture and create conditions for the younger generation to follow in its footsteps and revive these traditional cultural values.
Challenges and efforts to maintain heritage
Ms. Tran Thi Duan, Party Secretary of Bo Ban Village (Hoa Vang District) said that currently in the village there are only 3 people who are proficient in singing Ho Khoan, which is mainly performed during festivals and village assemblies. Although some elderly people know the melodies well, the singing is not as fluent as before. The village has proposed a plan to preserve Ho Khoan singing in the project "Building a unique cultural village", however, implementing this plan still faces many difficulties, especially in terms of funding and issues related to mergers.
“Currently, we have 2 scripts and works ready to perform at the Bo Ban Communal House Festival. Although the commune has also established the Bài Chòi Club, to maintain its activities, we need a lot of conditions in terms of funding and human resources,” Ms. Duẩn worried.
Mr. Do Thanh Tan, former Head of the Department of Culture and Information of Hoa Vang district, who has many years of experience and is knowledgeable about local culture and art, said that preserving and maintaining traditional cultural values, especially art forms such as Bài chòi and Hò khoan, is a very important task. Previously, the Department of Culture and Information proposed that the Union of Literature and Art Associations of the city support the creation of new works, from literature, art to painting and theater.
“The works need to take material from social life in Hoa Vang to encourage the process of building new rural areas, developing the economy, culture and society, and at the same time, there needs to be works that criticize bad habits, stagnant small-scale farming ideology or new bad customs, to help the community integrate well into the urbanization process. The important thing is to ensure that people can integrate into urban life, but still maintain the core values of traditional culture, preserve family, clan, village relationships, and live meaningfully and affectionately,” Mr. Tan emphasized.
With profound cultural values, Ho Khoan is an indispensable part of the spiritual life of Hoa Vang people, and is also a vivid testament to the diverse creativity of Quang people. However, the decline of this art form is a great concern for the community.
The preservation of Ho Khoan cannot stop at reenacting it during festivals, but requires a long-term strategy, with strong support from all levels of government and the community. Along with that, the participation of the younger generation, who have the ability to create and innovate, is the key for Ho Khoan to continue to develop and live forever.
Hoa Vang, with its relentless efforts, will certainly find a way to preserve and promote these priceless traditional cultural values.
