Firefighters in the US have completely contained the two Palisades and Eaton fires in California that broke out in early January, burning more than 10,000 hectares and killing at least 29 people.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection announced on January 31 that the two fires in southern California had been completely contained after 24 days, NBC News reported.

The Palisades Fire broke out on the morning of January 7 local time in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, and then spread due to the dry Santa Ana monsoon. Later that evening, the Eaton Fire broke out near the Angeles National Forest and spread to residential areas.

Winds of more than 100 km/h combined with dry weather caused the fires to spread quickly and become difficult to control, challenging firefighters. Los Angeles authorities said at least 29 people died in the two fires.

The Palisades Fire burned nearly 20,000 acres, destroying more than 6,800 structures, while the Eaton Fire burned more than 13,000 acres, of which more than 3,000 acres were residential buildings. The Eaton Fire destroyed more than 9,400 structures.

California officials have since lifted evacuation orders and have judged the fires no longer to pose a serious threat for more than a week. The complete containment of the two major fires ends more than three weeks of firefighters battling the blazes, which have displaced thousands of people and left behind extensive damage.

According to The New York Times , the cost of repairing the consequences could reach hundreds of billions of dollars, in addition to other impacts such as the psychological impact on people in the damaged areas and the health threat posed by the air quality in the affected areas. The reconstruction process could take many years, with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) initially handling the hazardous materials left behind by the fire.
