Call for more than $4 billion in humanitarian aid for Syria

The United Nations has just called for more than $4 billion in humanitarian aid to deal with food insecurity in Syria.

UN humanitarian coordinator Adam Abdelmoula warned that funding was running low and that lack of support would push more Syrians to flee. Around 12.9 million people are food insecure across the country. Failure to act would mean at least 2.5 million children would miss out on returning to school, and some 2.3 million women of reproductive age could lose access to vital maternal and child health services.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the ongoing conflict has forced some 14 million people to flee their homes. The situation in Syria is seen as deteriorating in almost all areas and is at risk of spiraling out of control.
