IAEA calls for halt to attack on Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi said that drone attacks on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine must be stopped immediately because such actions could create a “new and extremely dangerous” phase in the current conflict in Ukraine.

In a statement released on April 11, Director General Grossi emphasized that although the attacks on Europe's largest nuclear power plant did not pose any problems related to nuclear safety there, this development forced the IAEA to make assessments of the potential risk level.

The IAEA Director General also called on the 35-member Board of Governors, convened by both Russia and Ukraine, to unanimously support the agency’s role in monitoring the principles for preventing accidents at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, including the duty to prevent the plant from being attacked.

On the evening of April 7, the IAEA said that drones had conducted at least three direct attacks on the plant, damaging one of the six power generators and injuring one person.

The IAEA stressed that this was a serious incident, damaging the integrity of the containment system of nuclear reactors.
