Jannik Sinner has yet to return to practice after being forced to retire from the Cincinnati Open final, but his coach Darren Cahill has reassured fans about his player's health ahead of the US Open, where Sinner will defend his title.
Sinner won Wimbledon in July, and the Italian was in impressive form in Cincinnati, winning five straight matches without dropping a set to reach the final against Carlos Alcaraz. However, the much-anticipated match between the two top contenders did not go as expected.

Sinner had health problems as soon as the match started. He was broken in the first game and was forced to retire after 23 minutes when he was down 0-5.
Speaking after the match, Sinner said: “I didn’t feel well after the semi-final. I thought I would recover a little better, but it didn’t happen. I just tried to play for the fans, tried to give my best. But today was not my day. I don’t want to take anything away from Carlos. He had a great week. Now the main focus is the US Open. Recovery is the most important thing.”
Sinner's withdrawal from the US Open mixed doubles with Katerina Siniakova has raised concerns about his ability to compete in singles. With the Cincinnati final on Monday and the US Open main draw starting on Sunday, time is limited to prepare for the season-ending Grand Slam.
However, coach Cahill confirmed that Sinner had a virus but believes he will be “fine” for the big tournament in New York.
“Jannik had a virus that forced him to leave the game against Alcaraz. I spoke to him last night. He’s feeling a little better, he’s going to rest today, that’s the plan and hopefully he can come out tomorrow and start batting practice. We’re confident he’ll be fine,” Cahill said on ESPN’s broadcast.
This is not the first time Sinner has had fitness issues. He also struggled in the final stages of a five-set marathon against Alcaraz in the Roland Garros final, raising questions about his fitness.
“Even in Miami, against Daniil Medvedev, Sinner had a fever and had to play a tough match. Even at Wimbledon last year, the physical feeling was the same, although for different reasons. I see a commonality. When the match is the same, Sinner can be weaker than others and suffer more in certain conditions. I am okay with that, because it will help Sinner grow,” Cahill admitted.
