Can students change their elective subject combinations in grade 10?

On December 6, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City issued instructions on converting the combination of elective subjects and clusters of study topics in the 2018 General Education program at high school level.

In the document guiding the implementation of the Continuing Education system in high school, Mr. Duong Tri Dung, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, noted that students of the Continuing Education system have chosen subjects and study clusters from grade 10 which will remain stable until grade 12.

In special cases, if a student wishes to change his/her chosen subject or cluster of subjects, the director of the center will consider and make an appropriate decision. Changes to the chosen subject or cluster of subjects will only be made after the end of the school year to ensure compliance with regulations on testing and evaluation.

The Department of Education and Training also notes the case where students change their elective subjects and study clusters or when students transfer schools and must change their elective subjects and study clusters to match the receiving center.

Specifically, students must proactively self-study to supplement their knowledge in order to learn the selected subjects and new study topics. Depending on the actual situation, the center can have appropriate solutions to support students to improve their knowledge in order to learn the selected subjects.

Regarding the high school system, Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training, said that according to Official Dispatch No. 1496/BGDĐT-GDTrH of the Ministry of Education and Training, there are instructions: "In special cases, students who wish to change their chosen subjects, study subject clusters, the principal will consider and decide and report to the Department of Education and Training". Therefore, the change will be decided by the school. However, each school will have a plan to organize teaching, build class structure, regulate class size, assign teachers, facilities... so there will be specific instructions. Parents and students follow the school's instructions. Also according to Mr. Quoc, students must at least finish the first semester to ensure the conditions for testing and evaluating subjects before considering changing elective subjects.

Starting from the 2022-2023 school year, the 2018 GeneralEducation Program will be implemented at the high school level starting with grade 10. Accordingly, in addition to the compulsory subjects of math, literature, foreign languages, history, experiential education activities for career guidance, students will also study elective subject combinations in the form of career orientation. Specifically, students can choose subjects in 3 groups of subjects: social sciences, natural sciences, technology and arts.
