Efficiency from aquaculture model in Hoang Chau commune

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - The newly established Hoang Chau commune was established after arranging the entire natural area and population size of Hoang Thang, Hoang Phong, Hoang Luu and Hoang Chau communes. The commune has a natural area of 33.21 km2, including many advantageous areas for developing aquaculture.

Efficiency from aquaculture model in Hoang Chau commune

Harvesting white-leg shrimp in a covered pond at an aquaculture area in Hoang Chau commune.

The fields outside the Ma River dike are considered the "shrimp farming capital" of Hoang Chau commune. Standing on the dike, you will see dozens of industrial shrimp farming tanks covered with white and green roofs like giant mushrooms emerging in the middle of a large aquaculture area. In previous years, people here mainly raised shrimp extensively, but due to climate change, environmental pollution, and difficulty in controlling diseases, in the past 5 years, many households have gradually switched to intensive shrimp farming models using high technology. With large investment capital and proper application of technical processes, some models have brought high economic efficiency.

As one of the pioneers in building a high-tech white-leg shrimp farming model, Mr. Nguyen Van Suot's family in Chau Trieu village boldly converted the entire extensive shrimp farming area to invest in a system of 12 covered shrimp farming tanks, each tank has an area of over 500m2; at the same time, built a water treatment system, water and air conditioning equipment in the farming tanks. Mr. Suot said: When he first started converting the model, he failed right after releasing the first batch of shrimp because he did not fully understand the process and techniques of the new model. After that, he traveled everywhere to learn about shrimp farming in covered tanks. When he had accumulated a "back of capital" of experience, he continued to renovate the shrimp farming system and began to "eat and sleep" with the shrimp. Shrimp farming in covered tanks has many outstanding advantages compared to the traditional farming method, less dependent on weather factors as before.

To care for and protect farmed shrimp, in addition to using quality food, his family also uses probiotics to treat the bottom of the tank, clean the water source, improve the pond environment, and prevent pathogens. In favorable years, his family can raise 3-4 crops per year, bringing high productivity, earning hundreds of millions of VND per year. His family also creates jobs for 3 regular workers with an income of 10 million VND per month and dozens of seasonal workers each time they clean the pond and harvest shrimp.

Not only shrimp farming, crab is also one of the typical products from aquaculture activities in Hoang Chau commune. Households mainly raise crabs by intercropping and harvesting, the products supplied to the market are mainly meat crabs, very rarely molting crabs, while molting crabs are the products that are favored by many consumers and have high prices.

Realizing the market demand and the advantages of the local farming area, Director of SH79 Company Limited Le Van Chau in Dinh Long village has invested in a model of raising soft-shell crabs in plastic boxes with an area of nearly 1 hectare in a house with a roof, solid farming tanks, water treatment systems and cold storage... Crabs are carefully selected before being raised, weighing from 150 to 250g, then disinfected, put in separate plastic cages for daily care, monitoring and ensuring environmental conditions so that they can molt. Every day, crabs are fed according to their rations, the main food is herring, clams, mussels, snails... Soft-shell crabs are considered a high-class food item, the price of the product is currently high, ranging from 800,000 - 1,000,000 VND/kg depending on size. The production scale of SH79 Company Limited is currently about 5 tons of crabs/year. This is the first soft-shell crab farming model in Hoang Chau commune. The company's products have been recognized as 3-star OCOP in 2023.

Aquaculture is considered a key economic sector of coastal communes, in which aquaculture accounts for an increasingly significant proportion. High-tech shrimp and crab farming models will open up new prospects and directions in the aquaculture sector in Hoang Chau commune. However, there are also concerns about environmental issues and water resource protection for aquaculture areas. Therefore, the development of aquaculture areas needs to be planned and managed in a sustainable manner, both creating a breakthrough in developing intensive aquaculture areas in the direction of applying high technology to increase output, quality and economic efficiency, while strictly ensuring environmental factors to sustainably and long-term exploit the potential and advantages of aquaculture.
