Open international gateway
Lach Huyen deep-water port is part of the Hai Phong port cluster. Since berths 1 and 2 at Lach Huyen officially came into operation in 2018, Hai Phong has gradually realized its dream of having a modern deep-water seaport that can receive large-tonnage ships without transshipment. In the second quarter of 2025, berths 3, 4 and berths 5 and 6 will officially come into operation, bringing the total number of berths in operation at Lach Huyen deep-water port to 6.
As the first deep-water port in the North, Lach Huyen is capable of receiving 12,000 TEU container ships and 160,000 DWT general cargo ships. Goods from Lach Huyen transported to international markets do not have to transit through regional ports such as Hong Kong (China) or Singapore, thereby shortening time, reducing logistics costs and increasing the competitiveness of Vietnamese goods.
In the overall Hai Phong port cluster, Lach Huyen has an outstanding advantage thanks to its location outside the river mouth, convenient traffic connection via Hanoi - Hai Phong highway, railway and soon the coastal road, Tan Vu - Lach Huyen 2 bridge. These connections create an inter-regional transport corridor, helping to reduce logistics costs, improving the competitiveness of goods in the Northern region.
The volume of goods passing through Lach Huyen ports has continuously grown impressively, especially containerized goods imported and exported directly to Europe, the US, Japan, and South Korea. Major shipping lines such as Maersk, MSC, ONE, CMA-CGM, etc. choose Lach Huyen as a regular docking point. State management at the port area has been constantly improved, ensuring maritime activities take place safely, smoothly, effectively, and in strict compliance with international regulations.
Director of Hai Phong Maritime Port Authority Bui Nguyen Khoi informed that from the beginning of the year to the end of July 2025, the volume of goods through the seaports in Hai Phong area reached 65.5 million tons, an increase of 7% over the same period in 2024. Particularly at the ports of Lach Huyen deep-water port, in 7 months, there were 462 ships entering and leaving with the volume of containers passing through reaching 1.2 million TEU, an increase of 34% over the same period in 2024. With 6 berths at Lach Huyen port area put into synchronous operation since last May, it is expected that in 2025, the volume of goods passing through this area will reach about 2.2 million TEU.
Following the achieved results, on July 8, 2025, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha signed Decision No. 1497/QD-TTg approving the investment policy of the Project to build ports No. 9, 10, 11 and 12 at Lach Huyen wharf area. The project has a total investment capital of nearly VND 24,846 billion, implemented in two phases: Phase 1 from 2026 - 2030 will build two wharfs No. 9 and 10; Phase 2 from 2031 - 2035 will continue to implement two wharfs No. 11 and 12.
The main wharf is 1,800 m long, capable of receiving ships of 12,000 TEU to 18,000 TEU, along with a 400 m long auxiliary wharf serving feeder and inland ships. Along with that, building a system of container yards, repair shops, roads, auxiliary works and synchronous technical infrastructure works, ensuring all port operations; investing in modern, specialized cargo handling and loading equipment for port operations; the scale of land use (water surface) is about 146.2 ha.

The power of resonance
The investment goal of building 4 container ports No. 9, No. 10, No. 11 and No. 12 in Lach Huyen wharf area contributes to the formation of a modern seaport system, increasing the ability to receive large ships with a capacity of 12,000 - 18,000 TEU. On the other hand, connecting large seaports with duty-free zones and logistics behind the port, speeding up the circulation of goods, thereby enhancing advantages, creating momentum for development, attracting investment; maximizing the advantages of natural conditions and geographical location to develop Dinh Vu - Cat Hai Economic Zone (seaport system, logistics and industrial parks adjacent to the port).
The Government’s approval of four new ports in Lach Huyen port area creates a port cluster with scale and exploitation capacity comparable to that of Southeast Asia. This is a new milestone in the development of national seaports, creating leverage for Hai Phong to realize its goal of becoming a regional and international logistics center, especially in the context of Hai Phong and Hai Duong’s recent merger.
The event of Hai Duong province merging with Hai Phong city created a strong resonance force. With the advantage of being a coastal city, Hai Phong possesses all 5 types of transportation, has an important position in the Northern coastal region, the intersection of 2 economic corridors Kunming - Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong; Nanning - Lang Son - Hanoi - Hai Phong and the Northern coastal corridor; is an important traffic hub, the main gateway to the sea of the Northern provinces.
Meanwhile, Hai Duong (formerly) is a dynamic industrial and agricultural center, with a developed system of industrial parks and clusters, thousands of processing and assembly factories and large-scale agricultural production areas. The connection between Hai Duong's (formerly) processing capacity and Hai Phong's logistics seaport system will promote import and export, developing international trade.
According to Mr. Tran Tien Dung, Chairman of Hai Phong Logistics Association, in recent years, Hai Phong city has affirmed its important role in economic development and trade. With its position as the northern gateway, the city is now expanding its development space, creating more space, motivation and great opportunities to attract investment in the coming time.
