Journey of nearly 100km to find the light again

Having lived in the dark for many years because of his cloudy eyes due to cataracts, Mr. Hoang Van Dung (60 years old, Tuyen Lam commune, Quang Tri ) thought he would have to accept blindness for the rest of his life. Mr. Dung's wife emotionally shared: " If the team of doctors hadn't come to examine him, I would have thought that my husband would live forever with his eyes blind, but I didn't expect that his eyes could be saved."

Before the surgery, his vision was only 1/10, and his cloudy eyes made daily activities extremely difficult. He could not farm, and had to be supported or use a cane to walk. He confided: “ I thought I would live my whole life with these cloudy eyes .”

On August 14, 2025, Sai Gon Ha Tinh General Eye Hospital coordinated with Caritas Ha Tinh to organize free medical examination and medicine distribution in Tuyen Lam commune, Quang Tri province. Mr. Hoang Van Dung and hundreds of people were examined, consulted and given free medicine. When hearing the doctors introduce the Phaco surgery technique to treat cataracts that could help him regain his sight, he and his wife traveled nearly 100km to the hospital. Here, he was directly examined and consulted by Dr. Vo Ta Thien - an ophthalmologist in Ha Tinh, who has many years of experience in Phaco surgery.

After a thorough examination, the doctor concluded that both of Mr. Dung's eyes had severe cataracts. The surgery was performed that same day, taking only about 10 minutes per eye. Thanks to modern Phaco surgery technology, he could see immediately after getting off the operating table. The surgery gave him back his sight, opening up a new life - more complete and meaningful.

“ The moment I got off the operating table, I saw everything clearly in the operating room, and clearly saw Dr. Thien, who had operated on me. Now I can walk and work by myself, and especially I don’t need to use a cane to find my way like before,” Mr. Dung emotionally shared.

Dr. Vo Ta Thien said: “ Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the elderly, this disease can now be completely cured by Phaco surgery. The most important thing is that patients must be examined and intervened promptly to avoid unnecessary complications. With Phaco surgery, the surgery only takes about 7-10 minutes/eye. Patients can be discharged the same day after surgery.”
