Thousands of people, including children, have been harmed by eating disorders, depression, addiction and drug abuse related to fake and toxic news from TikTok, YouTube and Snapchat.
Therefore, in a recent announcement by the European Commission EC, the agency affirmed that social networking platforms TikTok, YouTube and Snapchat will have to explain how they operate and the video recommendation algorithms in the platform such as autoplay features, infinite video scrolling as well as the protection measures that the platform must apply to prevent the spread of harmful content.
Accordingly, all three units must provide documents before November 15 and if they do not provide information or provide false information, they will be fined under EU law.
The investigation will be conducted under the EU's Digital Services Act, which was passed in 2022 to tackle illegal content, advertising and disinformation. The investigation is preliminary and the European Commission will formally initiate legal proceedings after analysing the responses.
