At least 50 people have been killed in an attack by Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who have surrounded and raided villages in Sudan's al-Jazira state, activists say.

The RSF, which has been fighting Sudan's regular army since April 2023, has in recent days increased violence against civilians in al-Jazira state, south of the capital Khartoum, after their commander in the state defected to the opposition.

“The villages of al-Sariha and Azraq have been under attack since the morning of October 25,” the Hasaheisa Resistance Committee, one of hundreds of volunteer groups coordinating aid in Sudan, said in a statement late on October 25.

In al-Sariha alone, the attack killed 50 people and injured more than 200 others. The statement stressed that it was “completely impossible to evacuate the wounded from the village due to shelling and sniper fire” from the RSF.

With communications almost completely cut off, it is difficult to get an accurate death toll. The Resistance Committee said the nearby village of Azraq was under a complete siege, suffering similar attacks as al-Sariha, but did not provide a casualty figure.

On October 25, the Sudanese Doctors' Federation called on the United Nations (UN) to press for safe humanitarian corridors to villages "facing genocide at the hands of the RSF".

Rescue operations have become impossible and the military is unable to protect civilians, the organization added. According to medical sources in some villages, almost all medical facilities capable of handling emergency cases have been forced to close.
