On August 10, speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , Dr. Nguyen Duy Long, director of the 115 Emergency Center, said that in less than a month, the emergency team of Ho Chi Minh City's foreign hospitals had saved the lives of two newborn babies in a situation of falling, notably both babies had stopped breathing and had stopped breathing as soon as they were born.
The first case occurred on July 23, in Chanh Hung Ward (HCMC). The person who called the emergency services was the child’s grandmother, who was initially standing downstairs and was too scared to approach her daughter and grandchild.
Immediately after being reassured and encouraged by the 115 Emergency Center coordinator, she went to check on her child and saw that he was purple and had stopped breathing. Following the first aid instructions from the phone, she bravely performed CPR on the child before the 115 team arrived.
At the same time, two emergency teams from the 115 Emergency Center arrived at the scene. Doctors and nurses continued to actively resuscitate, intubate, and pump oxygen to help the baby regain his color and have a clear pulse.
The baby was transferred to Children's Hospital 1, the mother to Tu Du Hospital.
Through further investigation, it was learned that the baby's mother had an obstetric examination and determined that the fetus had an umbilical cord wrapped around its neck twice, little amniotic fluid, and was due to be born on July 21. The baby is currently being treated in the hospital's intensive care unit.
The second case took place on the morning of August 9 in Cat Lai ward. The pregnant woman was 31 weeks pregnant and had just received a lung maturation injection. Her water suddenly broke and she gave birth while waiting for the ambulance.
The baby was born cyanotic and had a hard time finding a pulse. The family was immediately instructed by the 115 coordinator to perform CPR remotely.
Two emergency teams from the satellite station of Saigon General Hospital and Le Van Thinh Hospital also quickly arrived. The emergency team clamped the umbilical cord, administered IV fluids, and transferred the mother to Le Van Thinh Hospital, and the baby to Children's Hospital 2. The baby had a stable pulse, weak breathing, and was receiving oxygen in the neonatal intensive care unit.
Dr. Long said the two cases above are clear evidence of the importance of calling 115 immediately when an emergency occurs.
Ho Chi Minh City's 115 hotline not only coordinates the fastest medical team, but also guides people to perform timely first aid steps, 24/7 - which can decide the patient's survival.
Doctor Long recommends that in case of life-threatening situations, call 115 immediately. Staying calm, trusting and following instructions will help save the lives of your loved ones.
