The city sets out requirements for environmental management (including wastewater, lake water and water levels, lake surface sanitation); air environment and waste, garbage; infrastructure, planning, construction and architecture.

Tay Ho District People's Committee is the focal point for comprehensive management, coordinating with city departments and branches to carry out the task of managing and exploiting West Lake.

Previously, West Lake had some business services such as floating houses, yachts, pedal boats... In 2015, Hanoi moved the inland waterway wharf at Thuy Khue, the intersection with Thanh Nien Street to Dam Bay in Nhat Tan Ward.

In early 2017, Hanoi requested an end to business activities in services, culture, sports, tourism, entertainment, aquaculture and exploitation of enterprises within the management scope of West Lake. Owners of tourist boats and floating houses must dismantle their vehicles and relocate. However, the relocation of all tourist boats from West Lake will not be completed until 2023.

As the largest natural freshwater lake in the northwest of Hanoi center, West Lake is over 500 hectares wide, with a circumference of about 15 km, and is part of the old Red River after its course was changed. Research by West Lake district shows that the aquatic ecosystem of West Lake is quite diverse with 72 floating plants, 47 species of bottom-dwelling algae, 37 species of floating animals, 29 species of benthic animals (belonging to the group of shrimp, crab, mussel, snail, worm...), 12 species of crustaceans, and 46 species of fish.
