Gomes became Greenwood's teammate at Marseille. |
The England midfielder's contract with Lille expires in the summer of 2025. Despite rumours of a return to Old Trafford for Gomes, with Premier League sides Tottenham and West Ham also showing interest, Gomes has decided to move to Marseille.
According to RMC Sport , Marseille offered Gomes a three-year contract at the Stade Velodrome. Gomes accepted the offer because he was attracted by coach Roberto De Zerbi's playing style and the opportunity to participate in the Champions League next season.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano used the familiar phrase "Here we go" to confirm the deal was done. A medical will take place today after the deal is finalised. Gomes is seen as an important addition to Marseille.
At Marseille, Gomes will be reunited with former Manchester United teammate Mason Greenwood. The England international has been a revelation since moving to France last summer, scoring 22 goals in Ligue 1 in his first season.
Meanwhile, Gomes left MU in 2021 and joined Lille. He made 134 appearances for the club and scored 10 goals. The 24-year-old midfielder admitted: "It was a very difficult decision. In my heart I wanted to leave, but in my head I thought I should stay. But I had to listen to my heart. I felt I needed to move forward in my career."
