Google is using artificial intelligence (AI) to improve its ability to detect and warn of natural disasters and emergencies early. The company recently upgraded its flood warning model to help researchers, emergency workers, and residents in vulnerable areas identify flood risks earlier.
Google's expansion of disaster warning models
According to Google, its AI-powered predictive model has now expanded to 100 countries, serving about 700 million people living in high-risk areas. This is a significant step up from the previous time, when only 80 countries and 460 million people were protected.
If you live in an area covered by Flood Hub, you will receive critical flood risk information up to 7 days in advance via Flood Hub, Google Search, and Google Maps. This time allows you to prepare and helps emergency responders plan their response more effectively.
On Google Maps, users can see suggested actions, like avoiding dangerous areas and reporting road closures, which helps Google provide more accurate information to the community.
This is a significant improvement over Google’s previous AI model, and the company says it will provide an API for researchers and emergency workers to help them more accurately predict future incidents based on live data from areas with monitoring devices, as well as historical data going back to 1981.
