Industry is the engine of growth

Thai Nguyen owns about 7,000 hectares of land for industrial development along with rich and diverse mineral resources. Some minerals have large reserves, notably polymetallic tungsten with the second largest reserves in the world , playing an important role as raw material for high-tech industries.

From its former position as the “steel capital”, Thai Nguyen has taken advantage of its existing advantages to transform itself strongly in industrial development. Currently, the province affirms its role as the “new industrial capital” with the Samsung Electronics Complex (Korea) as the core, creating growth momentum and spreading strongly to localities in the region.

With 19 industrial parks, 1 concentrated information technology park under development and 68 industrial clusters, along with efforts to reform administration, enhance competitiveness, promote digital transformation and improve the investment environment, Thai Nguyen has created favorable conditions for the business community to develop.

Since the early 2010s, the province has made a breakthrough when many large domestic and foreign corporations chose Thai Nguyen as a destination to expand production, creating jobs for hundreds of thousands of workers. The presence of large-scale enterprises brings investment capital, modern technology and creates an important "push", helping Thai Nguyen become the leading center of electronic and mechanical industry manufacturing in the country, and at the same time rise to the leading group in terms of industrial production value and export turnover.

Every year, Thai Nguyen produces billions of electronic components and hundreds of thousands of tons of processed industrial products, exporting them to more than 60 countries and territories. The processing and manufacturing industry recorded strong growth with products such as motor vehicle spare parts, medical equipment, electronics, etc.

Industry has become the main driving force for the province's economic growth. In the period 2021-2025, the value of industrial production (2010 comparative price) will increase by an average of 8% per year, expected to reach 1,156 trillion VND by 2025, of which the FDI sector will contribute about 1,060 trillion VND, accounting for 92% of the total value.

Sustainable agricultural development

Along with the impressive progress of industry, Thai Nguyen agriculture also affirms its sustainable direction, creating balance and complementing the overall development of the province. Constantly innovating and applying technology, the agricultural sector is developing in a sustainable direction.

In the period of 2021-2025, the value of agricultural, forestry and fishery production will increase by an average of 3.9% per year. Currently, the whole province has 569 OCOP products with 3 stars or more, of which 446 are 3-star products (78.3%), 113 are 4-star products (19.9%) and 10 are 5-star products (1.8%).

Digital agricultural models and production-linked cooperatives have been established, helping farmers increase their income, connect to markets, and move towards smart production. Rural spaces are also changing comprehensively, becoming green, clean, and civilized.

The province focuses on leading and directing the implementation of national target programs on new rural construction, sustainable poverty reduction and socio-economic development in ethnic minority areas, associated with the movement "Thai Nguyen/Bac Kan join hands to build new rural areas". The poverty reduction rate exceeds the set plan.

Rural transport, irrigation, social infrastructure and rural trade systems are invested synchronously; rural electricity systems are prioritized for upgrading. The rural environment is gradually becoming cleaner, safer; national cultural identity is preserved and promoted in association with socio-economic development, especially tourism.

With the largest tea growing area, productivity and output in the country, Thai Nguyen is implementing many solutions to turn tea into a billion-dollar revenue industry by 2030.

Infrastructure - urban: Breakthrough for integration

Located in the planning of the Hanoi Capital region, with a favorable geographical location and an increasingly synchronous and modern transport infrastructure system, Thai Nguyen plays an important role as a transport hub, connecting the northern mountainous provinces with the key economic region of the North. Clearly identifying this advantage, the province prioritizes infrastructure investment, especially regional linkage and connection projects.

In the 2020-2025 period, Thai Nguyen will allocate VND9,172 billion for 26 transport projects, with an expected completion of 17 projects, including 79.36km of new construction and 79.29km of road renovation, along with more than 2,200km of rural roads. The old Bac Kan province will also allocate VND5,770 billion for 12 projects (40% of the medium-term plan), with an expected completion of all projects, including 55km of newly opened provincial roads and 55.6km of renovated roads.

In addition, the Central Government has started the Cho Moi - Bac Kan Expressway Project with a total investment of VND5,750 billion. When completed, these projects will create a breakthrough in the development of transport infrastructure, ensuring smooth connection with the national network and neighboring provinces, while opening up new development space for industrial zones, clusters, trade - services, urban areas and tourism.

At the same time, the urban appearance of Thai Nguyen is increasingly flourishing with the Central Square, pedestrian streets, model urban areas, etc., creating a modern and civilized living space. Urban planning in the direction of smart, green and digitalization is gradually realizing the goal of sustainable urbanization by 2030, with a vision to 2045.

The province focuses on building smart and sustainable urban areas, focusing on completing technical and social infrastructure, especially telecommunications and information technology; maintaining the leading position in the country in digital government, creating breakthroughs in digital infrastructure.

At the same time, the province implements national programs on urban development associated with climate change response, improving the quality of existing urban areas. Water supply systems are invested, ensuring 100% of urban areas and 80% of rural areas have clean water that meets standards; fire prevention and fighting systems are arranged according to planning.

Affirming the role of connection and leading growth

With its central position in the Viet Bac region and its role as a growth pole in the Capital region, Thai Nguyen has strategic advantages and at the same time bears the responsibility of "taking the lead and leading" in development.

The results achieved in implementing Resolution No. 11-NQ/TW dated February 10, 2022 of the Politburo on "Orientations for socio-economic development, ensuring national defense and security in the Northern Midlands and Mountains region to 2030, with a vision to 2045" continue to affirm the province's role as a core, connecting and leading regional economic growth.

In particular, the milestone of merging Thai Nguyen and Bac Kan provinces creates more momentum, adding great potential and advantages to plan new development goals.

According to Mr. Bui Tat Thang, former Director of the Institute of Development Strategy (Ministry of Planning and Investment, now the Ministry of Finance), Thai Nguyen has a space for comprehensive development, with the requirement of linking economic growth with urban development, building ecological and high-tech industrial parks, selecting key manufacturing industries to meet international demand and attract FDI.

He also emphasized the need to expand horizontal development corridors and strengthen connections between the midland and mountainous provinces in the North to not only circulate goods but also create common strengths for the whole region.

Total social investment capital in the 2021-2025 period reached about 374 trillion VND, an average of 75 trillion VND/year. The province attracted 231 domestic investment projects with a total capital of 81,734 billion VND; to date, there have been 1,095 projects with a total registered capital of 1.01 million billion VND.

Regarding FDI, during this period, there were 150 newly licensed projects and capital increases, totaling 2.73 billion USD; the cumulative total reached 228 projects with a total capital of 11.2 billion USD. This is an important foundation for Thai Nguyen to continue consolidating its position as the center of the Northern Midlands and Mountains region.

To increase resources and attract investment, the province is promoting the development of inter-regional infrastructure systems with many key projects; at the same time, implementing the roadmap to build Thai Nguyen into a center for high-level electricity, electronics, and mechanical engineering production, developing green - sustainable - circular agriculture, applying high technology, digital transformation, and aiming for a locality "worth visiting, worth living".

In the period of 2020-2025, Thai Nguyen's economy will grow by an average of 7.3% per year; GRDP in 2025 will reach about 202,925 billion VND, 1.6 times higher than in 2020. Budget revenue will increase from 16,440 billion VND (in 2020) to over 26,500 billion VND (in 2025), 1.7 times higher.

The province aims to achieve an average GRDP growth rate of 10.5% per year or more in the 2025-2030 period; GRDP per capita will reach 196 million VND in 2030, 1.5 times higher than in 2025.
