On July 29, Muong Tip Commune Health Station, Nghe An province confirmed that staff had assisted a pregnant woman in giving birth safely when her water broke on the way to Ky Son Medical Center (Nghe An).
Pregnant woman Pit Thi Hien, residing in Ta Do village, Muong Tip commune, was 9 months pregnant and had a stomachache so she went to Muong Tip commune health station to give birth on July 26. However, upon arriving at the medical facility, the pain stopped and she was instructed to be closely monitored.

The pregnant woman was 42 weeks pregnant, with no signs of labor. Due to the impact of floods, the power system and medical equipment were not guaranteed, Muong Tip Commune Health Station decided to transfer the pregnant woman to Ky Son Health Center to give birth, and sent 2 medical staff to accompany her for support.

Ms. Vi Thi Thoa, obstetrician and pediatrician at Muong Tip Commune Health Station, said the group left the station at 6:30 a.m. on July 29. Because the road from the commune to Ky Son Health Center was severely eroded and the floodwaters were high, it was impossible to travel by car, motorbike or boat, so the group had to walk.
The pregnant woman was helped by medical staff and family members through landslides and streams, and was supported by local people by motorbike through short sections of favorable terrain.
At around 9am, when arriving at Xop Kham village (Muong Tip commune), more than 8km from the medical station and about 25km from Ky Son Medical Center, the pregnant woman suddenly went into labor.

The pregnant woman had no amniotic fluid, the fetus was large, and she showed signs of exhaustion due to not eating enough during pregnancy and having just traveled a long distance. Faced with this situation, the medical staff accompanying her called the leaders of Ky Son Medical Center and Ta Ca Medical Station (the nearest medical facility) to request support.
Ms. Thoa and Ms. Moong Y Hue, general practitioners at Muong Tip Health Station, spread out blankets and used a medical kit to deliver the baby Hien right on the road. With the efforts of the medical staff, Ms. Hien gave birth to a baby boy, weighing about 3.5 kg. Due to the large fetus and the weak mother, the baby suffocated when born.

“We performed CPR on the suffocating infant and breathed a sigh of relief, feeling like we had just received diamonds when the baby started crying and breathing,” said Ms. Thoa.
According to this female medical worker, during her 25 years working in the mountainous commune, she has encountered and assisted many cases of "unplanned births" on the road. However, this is the first time she and her colleagues have assisted a pregnant woman giving birth on the road in conditions of terrain cut off by floods, poor health, large fetuses, and the risk of obstetric complications.
During the recent historic flood, Muong Tip commune was isolated for a long time. Ta Do village suffered heavy damage and has now entered its second week of isolation. The family of pregnant woman Hien also had their house and property completely swept away by the flood.
After the health of the mother and baby stabilized, medical staff, the mother’s husband, and the support of local people set up a temporary shelter nearby for the mother to rest. Some volunteer groups also provided timely support to the mother. However, according to Ms. Thoa, stabilizing food and accommodation to ensure the health of the mother and baby is the main concern.
