Teachers 'sweat' over graduation English exam, even 7.0 IELTS score is defeated

Many teachers said that the 2025 high school graduation English exam was long and time-consuming, and even candidates with IELTS 6.5 - 7.0 would find it difficult to complete it in time.

MSc. An Thuy Linh, teacher at Luong The Vinh Secondary and High School, assessed that this year's English graduation exam has a very high level of differentiation. Students who are good at English will get around 6-7 points; average students will get 4-5 points. Only those who are really good can get 8-9 points.

“With 50 minutes, students who work carefully and seriously may run out of time because the amount of information and language is long and extensive. This year, the English subject will probably have few 10s,” said Ms. Linh, adding that it took her more than 40 minutes to complete this test.

However, this female teacher assessed that the exam had a lot of good content, updated information, tested both language and basic knowledge in life. This exam trained students in reading and understanding documents, communication situations, writing short paragraphs, writing flyers, advertisements, announcements, etc.

In addition, the topics in the test questions are rich, similar to those in the 12th grade textbooks. However, the amount of vocabulary and grammar structures used is at a much more advanced level than the amount of words in the textbooks, Ms. Linh added.

Ms. Le Bich Huong, lecturer at Hanoi University, an IELTS preparation teacher, assessed that the questions in this year's graduation English exam had high differentiation.

Candidates who want to complete this test well with a score of 8 or higher must not only have a solid knowledge of grammar and vocabulary but also have a lot of background knowledge and understand the true nature of the information in the passage, especially with the type of questions that require filling in the blanks to fit the paragraph. Candidates need to grasp critical thinking and clearly understand the context of the text to be able to choose the most suitable sentence for the blank rather than just memorizing and tips for choosing answers.

The female lecturer analyzed that the topic of this year's reading is very interesting, covering many diverse areas: personal finance, tourism, technology in agriculture , environment and climate change. Among them is a very topical reading about greenwashing (fake environmental branding), which is critical and requires candidates to have critical thinking. The section on digital agriculture provides many specialized terms, testing candidates' ability to read and understand technology and processes.

In general, the reading passages in the test are taken from real sources to enhance the applicability and practicality of the test and make it closer to social life. The sources are usually taken from newspaper pages, helping students understand the articles from real contexts.

This year's English test is somewhat similar to the IELTS test, focusing on skills and practical assessment. "With this test format, candidates with IELTS level 6.5-7.0 will find it difficult to pass 100%," the female lecturer frankly assessed.

The strongest and brightest point in this year’s exam is the question of arranging the order of communication sentences. This type of question requires candidates to understand each role in the dialogue to be able to arrange the order of the dialogue appropriately.

In general, the test is good and has a high level of differentiation, limiting rote learning and stereotyped grammar and vocabulary compared to before. Students are required to have good foreign language skills and be able to apply them to real-life applications in order to be able to do the test. With the difficulty level of this year's English test, only very good candidates can get a score of 9 and the average score is around 5 or 6 points.

Mr. Vu Ha Thanh Luan, an English teacher for grade 12 at MV Lomonosov Secondary and High School, said that the reading topic in the exam still closely follows the topic in the 2018 generaleducation program, but the long reading passage with many vocabulary words at a high level makes it difficult for candidates who want to get a score of 8.5 or higher because students must have a good vocabulary, reading comprehension skills, and the ability to reason based on context to be able to get a high score.

"Processing these 40 questions in 50 minutes is not a simple challenge for good students," Mr. Luan commented and predicted that the average score would only be 5.5-6.5.

Student Tran Thu Phuong (Viet Duc High School, Hanoi) commented that the English test was too long, with a lot of new content and vocabulary, different from what was previously predicted.

Even though she has an IELTS certificate of 7.0, Phuong still only dared to receive about 8 points on the English exam. "The word I remember the most is 'greenwashing', I can't translate the meaning, I can only guess based on the context of the lesson," the female student said.

Similarly, Hoang Ngoc Trinh, a 12th grade student at Truong Dinh High School (Hanoi), shared that the test was too long, the language was difficult and there were many new words. "I randomly circled 4-5 questions in the test because I didn't have enough time," the female student said, predicting that she would only get about 7 points in English.

The 2025 high school graduation exam took place on June 26-27 with more than 1.16 million candidates, an increase of nearly 100,000 compared to last year.

Candidates take two compulsory subjects: Math and Literature and two elective subjects from the remaining subjects studied in grade 12, including: Foreign Language, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, and Technology.

Except for Literature, which is an essay test with a time limit of 120 minutes, the remaining subjects are multiple choice tests, of which Math takes 90 minutes and the remaining subjects take 50 minutes.

High school graduation exam scores will be announced on July 16.
