Durian price in the Southwest - Mekong Delta (MD)
The domestic durian market today, June 13, continues to record a downward trend, especially in the Mekong Delta region.
The price of Thai durian grade A in the West has dropped sharply by 3,000 - 5,000 VND/kg compared to yesterday, currently fluctuating around 75,000 - 80,000 VND/kg. Ri6 durian also remains low, showing that consumption demand has not recovered.
Durian price in Southeast
In the Southeast region, durian prices remain higher than in the West. Thai A durian is being purchased at 80,000 - 85,000 VND/kg, Thai B durian at 60,000 - 65,000 VND/kg, while Ri6 has only increased slightly, commonly at 44,000 - 46,000 VND/kg for type A.
Durian price in the Central Highlands
In the Central Highlands, the market did not record many fluctuations. The purchase price of Thai durian type A is at 80,000 - 82,000 VND/kg; type B is at 60,000 - 62,000 VND/kg; and Ri6 type A is equivalent to the price in the other two regions, fluctuating around 44,000 - 46,000 VND/kg.
The main reason for this downward trend is that durian exports are facing difficulties due to technical barriers, especially related to cadmium residue - a heavy metal banned by many markets - exceeding the threshold in agricultural products. This causes output to be tightened, directly affecting domestic purchasing prices, especially for exported durians which are inherently expensive.
If this situation continues, gardeners and businesses will face great pressure in both production costs and consumption, especially in the context of supply entering its peak period.
Khanh Son durian is concerned about the risk of cadmium residue.
In the durian growing area of Khanh Son ( Khanh Hoa ), most farmers do not have the conditions to check the quality of the soil or irrigation water to eliminate the risk of cadmium residue from the beginning.
For many weeks now, information about cadmium has left people confused and worried, but they do not know how to handle it. They are only familiar with farming based on experience, planting trees to produce many fruits, and using fertilizers and pesticides according to the seller's instructions.
Currently, the entire district has about 2,000 hectares of durian in the harvest stage, with last year’s output reaching more than 15,000 tons, bringing in revenue of over VND1,000 billion. However, if the durian does not meet safety standards for export, this revenue will be at risk of a sharp decline.
The country currently has more than 150,000 hectares of durian. In the first four months of the year, exports of this item decreased by 53% in volume and 61% in value compared to the same period last year. The main reason is still the problem of cadmium residue - a factor that causes many shipments to be rejected.
According to experts, the urgent thing now is to support farmers in applying strict cultivation processes to create safe products. This is also the greatest desire of durian growers in the current context.
