Gia Lai: Opening of two international scientific events, gathering hundreds of experts

DNVN - Two international scientific events opened at ICISE, gathering nearly 140 researchers from nearly 30 countries. The event not only affirmed Vietnam's academic position but also showed that Gia Lai is gradually becoming a new meeting place for global knowledge flows.

Destination of academics

On July 7, the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science andEducation (ICISE, Quy Nhon Nam, Gia Lai) simultaneously opened two international scientific events including the 3rd Biomechanics Conference: from basic research to application and the 9th Vietnam School of Astrophysics (VSOA9).

The two events, organized by the Vietnam Science Association, the ICISE Center in collaboration with prestigious international organizations, attracted nearly 140 delegates, including many famous professors, leading scientists, graduate students and excellent students from nearly 30 countries and territories.

The biomechanics conference took place from July 7-11, bringing together nearly 100 experts from 25 countries. The program focuses on advanced research areas such as cell signaling, tissue mechanics, biomaterials, biomedical engineering and theoretical modeling.

This is an opportunity to gather many big names in the industry, such as Professor Dennis Discher (University of Pennsylvania, USA), Professor Song Li (University of California, USA), Professor Xavier Trepat (Institute of Biotechnology of Catalonia, Spain)... In particular, the conference also provides an open space for young researchers to approach new trends and expand in cross-disciplinary cooperation.

Taking place from July 7–12, the 9th Vietnam School of Astrophysics (VSOA9) attracted nearly 40 international students and experts. The main topic revolves around the formation and evolution of galaxies, a field that is making many breakthroughs thanks to observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the ALMA telescope system.

In addition to theoretical lectures, the program provides modern astronomical data analysis skills. Lecturers from the University of Tokyo (Japan), National Central University (Taiwan), Center for Astrobiology (Spain) and Vietnam Space Center teach directly.

VSOA is an annual international school chain founded by ICISE Center and Vietnam Rencontres du Science Association since 2013, aiming to nurture the young generation who love science and promote the regional astronomy cooperation network.

Science needs environment, locality needs vision

More than just a conference venue, ICISE is gradually reshaping the map of Vietnam's scientific infrastructure towards integration and sustainability. Founded from the vision of Professor Tran Thanh Van – a world-renowned physicist, ICISE is a rare academic center in Southeast Asia that operates independently, non-profit, focusing on basic science and international connections.

French Ambassador to Vietnam Olivier Brochet recently participated in the International Conference “From Mekong to Ocean: Connecting the Young Generation of LabelFrancÉducation High Schools”, at the ICISE Center.

In the context of Vietnam aiming to become a country with a knowledge economy , investing in “soft infrastructure” such as ICISE is an inevitable requirement. This is not only physical infrastructure (conference rooms, equipment, accommodation for experts...) but also “gray matter infrastructure” - where global knowledge converges, dialogues and spreads.

From seminars to summer schools, from astrophysics to biomechanics, biotechnology, artificial intelligence... ICISE is gradually becoming a strategic academic nucleus, connecting Vietnam with the most important knowledge flows in the world.

In the long term, if integrated into the national policy on science, technology and innovation development, the ICISE model can be replicated in other regions, such as Da Lat, Hue, the Central Highlands, or even university and high-tech zones. These will be “academic incubators” that not only inspire research for young people, but also lay the foundation for the sustainable development of a country that is driven by knowledge.

According to Mr. Nguyen Huu Ha - Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Gia Lai province, since 2013, ICISE has welcomed more than 16,500 scientists from more than 60 countries, including 18 Nobel Prize winners. This is not only the pride of the locality and the country, but also a vivid symbol of the spirit of connecting knowledge and contributing to sustainable development.

"The leaders of Binh Dinh province in the past and Gia Lai province at present have always identified science and education as strategic paths for development. Therefore, we are committed to continuing to accompany and create the most favorable conditions for ICISE to maximize its mission: to act as a bridge between Vietnamese and international scientists, promote excellent research groups, and nurture the passion for science for the young generation," Mr. Ha emphasized.

Grateful to Professor Yannick Giraud-Héraud

ICISE would like to express its gratitude to Professor Yannick Giraud-Héraud (Laboratory for Astral Particle Physics and Cosmology, Paris Cité University, France), who has played an important role as a bridge between the organizing committee of the Biomechanics Workshop and ICISE since 2016, contributing to laying the foundation for strong scientific cooperation.

The professor passed away on June 13. His legacy will continue to spread in every discussion session and every generation of students at ICISE, as a symbol of the spirit of borderless connection in science.
