Pig and breeding pig prices drop sharply

In recent days, the price of live pigs in the province has decreased quite sharply.

According to records, after peaking at 8.3 - 8.5 million VND/quintal at the end of 2025, in recent months, the price of live pigs in the province has gradually "cooled down". The price of live pigs has remained stable for quite a long time. However, in just the last 10 days, the price of live pigs has decreased by about 500,000 VND/quintal.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tam's family (Long Binh commune, Dong Thap province) raises more than 20 pigs of various types. According to Mr. Tam, more than a month ago, the price of live pigs was still above 7 million VND/quintal. However, over the past week, the price of live pigs has dropped rapidly and is currently at around 6.4 million VND/quintal.

Mr. Tam said: “With the current price of live pigs, farmers still make a profit, but it is small. I just hope the price stays at this level and does not decrease any further. In the past few days, I have seen the outbreak of disease in the news and on the radio, so I am very worried. Now, all I know is to clean the barns carefully and vaccinate the pigs fully.”

Meanwhile, in Tan Thoi commune, Dong Thap province, the price of live pigs has also dropped quite sharply. Mr. Duong Tan Si's family (Tan Thoi commune) currently raises more than 300 pigs of various types.

According to Mr. Si, more than last week, the price of live pigs in the area was around 6.95 million VND/quintal. However, the current price of live pigs has dropped to around 6.3 - 6.5 million VND/quintal. In addition to the price of live pigs, the price of piglets has also dropped quite sharply. Specifically, compared to last week, the price of piglets weighing 6 - 8 kg is around 1.5 million VND/pig, down about 300,000 VND/pig.

Mr. Si shared: “Recently, seeing the epidemic situation happening a lot, I sold 70 pigs early for meat, each weighing from 85 kg to over 100 kg, at a price of 70,000 VND/kg. However, because traders caught them sporadically, I was only able to sell about 30 pigs.

Currently, my farm has about 100 pigs, each weighing about 60 - 70 kg, and is considering reducing feeding. With the current price, each pig sold at my farm still makes a profit of about 1.3 - 1.5 million VND. The reason for the decrease in the price of live pigs is due to the outbreak of African swine fever in many localities across the country.

Currently, I am only worried about the epidemic. At this time, any household with investment capital will have great potential. Because when the epidemic subsides, the price of live pigs will increase again. However, due to the high risks, few people dare to invest."

According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap province, as of the end of June 2025, the province's pig herd was about 669,000, an increase of about 17.6% over the same period last year.
