According to data collected by Gallup in 2023 and published in 2024, of the 12,000 Americans aged 18 and older surveyed, more than 1 in 5 Gen Z adults (aged 18-26) identify as LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or generally a group with a different sexual orientation).

When looking at Millennials, nearly 1 in 10 adults aged 27 to 42 identify as LGBTQ+, compared to less than 5% of Gen Xers (those born between 1965 and 1980), 2% of Baby Boomers (born between 1955 and 1964), and 1% of the Silent Generation (parents of those born between 1955 and 1964).

Overall, bisexuality is the most common identity among Gen Z, Millennials, and Gen X, representing more than two-thirds of people who identify as LGBTQ+.

Women are most likely to identify as bisexual, while men are also likely to identify as bisexual or gay. Among older generations, LGBTQ+ people are more likely to say they are gay or lesbian than bisexual.

“Nearly 30% of Gen Z women identify as LGBTQ+, most of whom are bisexual,” Jeffrey Jones, senior editor at Gallup, told NBC News.

Since Gallup first asked about gender identity and transgender identification in 2012, the proportion of US adults who identify as non-heterosexual has more than doubled.

And according to Gallup analysis, young Americans are leading the change, and generational trends suggest that the LGBTQ+ population will be higher in the future.

“If current trends continue, it is likely that the proportion of people identifying as LGBTQ+ will exceed 10% of adults in the U.S. at some point within the next three decades,” Gallup said in a statement.
