Nearly 500 people killed in Lebanon, France asks UN Security Council to hold urgent meeting

France has asked the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to hold an emergency meeting to discuss the situation in Lebanon, after Israel launched a large-scale cross-border attack.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly on September 23 (local time), French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot stated: "I have requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Lebanon this week", and called on all parties to "avoid a major regional conflict that could have devastating consequences for everyone, especially civilians".

According to Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health , 492 people, including 35 children, were killed in Israeli airstrikes in eastern and southern Lebanon on September 23. This is the highest daily death toll in nearly a year of cross-border clashes between Israel and Hezbollah. According to Al Jazeera, in the past 24 hours, Israel has targeted 1,300 Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, forcing residents in the two areas to evacuate.

Hezbollah has also launched about 150 missiles, rockets and drones into northern Israel in retaliation for the attacks that killed a senior commander and dozens of fighters. The escalating attacks between the two sides have raised fears of an all-out war in the Middle East.
