Epic Games Store Hasn't Made a Dime Since Launch

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên08/11/2023

Back when it first launched, the Epic Games Store took many in the gaming industry by surprise. It offered a number of features designed to benefit both PC gamers and game developers, including weekly free games with 88% of game revenue from the store going to developers, according to Neowin.

To attract game developers, Epic even lets them receive 100% of revenue on the Epic Games Store for the first 6 months.

Despite seeing massive growth since launch, Epic Games Store head Steve Allison said his company hasn’t made any money from the division. Allison provided the information as part of his testimony on the first day of the trial between Epic Games and Google over Play Store policies.

Allison told the court that the Epic Games Store has yet to turn a profit after nearly five years, saying the store's goal now is growth. Still, that's not good news for a venture that has struggled to compete with other digital game stores, especially when compared to Valve's highly successful Steam store.

To attract people to the store, Epic recently added support for self-publishing games for developers on the Epic Games Store. The company even offers developers 100% of the revenue from their games on the store for the first 6 months, for both new exclusive games and games that have been previously released on Steam and other stores.

For consumers, the Epic Games Store continues to not only offer at least one new game for free every week, but also has a rewards program that gives gamers 5% back on their purchases that they can use later to buy games.

But with the store losing money since launch, the question is how long Epic will continue to operate this part of the business. Earlier this year, the company laid off 16% of its staff due to financial problems.
