Flooded road in Saigon for 6 months repaired

VnExpressVnExpress01/01/2024

An Phu Dong 35 Street, which was flooded for 6 months, has become more spacious after more than 100 households contributed 1.3 billion VND and upgraded it with District 12.

On the morning of January 1, people along An Phu Dong 35, An Phu Dong Ward happily traveled on the newly paved road after more than a month of repair. The sidewalks on both sides were also paved with flat concrete. A new 60cm diameter pipe system stretching nearly 400m was placed under the road surface to drain rainwater and high tides.

This road was flooded for 6 months because there was no drainage system. Due to lack of funds, the damaged road surface could not be repaired until 114 households contributed money with the government to repair it at the end of November. Each house on the street front contributed 800 thousand VND per meter of frontage, while households in the neighboring alley contributed half of the amount.

Having contributed nearly 6 million VND to repair the road, Mr. Them, 40 years old, said that the road looked like it had "changed its look" after a month. Previously, the road was muddy and black, and every time a big vehicle drove over the potholes, dirty water splashed into the house, making it very dirty.

With a four-meter-wide house in an alley a dozen meters from the road, Mr. Phan Chi Tho, 57 years old, was also happy to contribute 1.4 million VND to build the road. "I feel very comfortable when my neighbors contribute money to build the road together," he said.

Ms. Vo Thi Ngoc Lan, Chairwoman of An Phu Dong Ward People's Committee, said that to repair this road, the ward had mobilized households 4-5 times over the course of two months to contribute about 1.3 billion VND, while the district spent more than 1.9 billion VND. The fact that people and the government contributed money to build the road has shortened the time instead of having to wait for funding from the budget.
