British research organization DEEP plans to build a modular underwater base called Sentinel, expected to open in 2027.

Sentinel is a modular facility that is expected to include housing, a research laboratory and an underwater observatory, Design Boom reported on September 11. The base will allow scientists to live underwater at depths of 200 meters for up to 28 days, allowing them to study continental shelves more closely. Scientists will be able to closely observe, monitor and better understand the ocean and marine life when the project is operational.

The proposed base site is located between south-west England and Wales. It was chosen because of its suitable terrain, clear water and proximity to a number of companies specialising in marine engineering, diving, hyperbaric and submersibles.

Experts will build Sentinel with robotic welding arms, applying a technology similar to 3D printing with metal materials, thanks to which the structure is capable of withstanding extremely high pressure. The modular system can adapt, customize and change the layout flexibly. Each module is 6 m in diameter, approximately the width of the fuselage of a Boeing 777, and is capable of serving 6 people.

DEEP has established its own academy to train divers who will help transport structures from land to water, and also guide Sentinel's long-term operations.

The Sentinel Power System is built using a microgrid architecture integrated with DEEP’s satellite communications buoys and renewable energy sources. DEEP’s team is also working on a large-scale bioreactor to process all of the waste.

“We need to conserve the oceans. To do that, we need to understand them,” said Steve Etherton, a leader at DEEP. Through ocean research, DEEP targets opportunities and solutions in pharmaceutical research, carbon capture, and innovative medicines.
