Long Thanh airport project must be successful

"We are facing an important development issue, we need to deal with it in a more methodical manner, not in a "come and go" way of thinking" - Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Dinh Thien, former Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Economics , emphasized at the seminar "Promoting Long Thanh - Ho Chi Minh City connectivity" organized by Tuoi Tre newspaper on the afternoon of June 27.

According to Dr. Thien, in the current world economic context, Vietnam cannot but be fast, otherwise it will be left out. But it is also necessary to pay attention to feasibility. Of course, "a big project like Long Thanh airport must be successful".

With Long Thanh, on the one hand, it is necessary to clearly define the portrait and space. On the other hand, it is necessary to focus on the value of development at the right level, this is a national project, not of a single locality or region.

Dr. Tran Dinh Thien said Dong Nai has the advantage of owning an international transit port and Long Thanh international airport - something that Hanoi , Hai Phong and many other localities do not have - Photo: QUANG DINH

When positioned as an “airport city”, Long Thanh needs to consider the need for international transit and attract global tourists, similar to Singapore’s model. Vietnam’s current approach is to come later but must strive to get ahead, and Long Thanh is no exception.

He believes that the main force of Vietnam's development today is the private sector. When opened, the growth power seems boundless and enormous. Previously, many projects were very difficult to get approved, but now they have been cleared. For example, there were projects that used to take 5 years, but now they only take 7 months.

The Long Thanh airport project must set the right priorities in terms of human resources, resources, speed, etc. to avoid the risk of completing the project without knowing what to do with it, and not being able to promote its strengths. There needs to be close coordination between the private and public sectors to develop the airport city.

Mr. Huynh Tan Loc, Deputy Director of the Department of Construction of Dong Nai province, shared that Long Thanh ward is expected to be a place that meets the requirements of electricity infrastructure, social infrastructure, population size... to serve the airport urban area - Photo: QUANG DINH

Mr. Huynh Tan Loc - Deputy Director of the Department of Construction of Dong Nai province - said that the new Long Thanh International Airport project is planned to be about 5,000 hectares wide, and is expected to expand by about 20,000 hectares.

Dong Nai province is implementing the idea of developing an auxiliary area, with the joint efforts of Long Thanh, Nhon Trach, Cam My, Trang Bom and Bien Hoa.

Currently, the process of merging communes and wards is taking place. The goal is to have the first commercial flight land in 2026, in Long Thanh ward.

For this project, traffic connection is still a real problem. People with good economic conditions can easily travel to Long Thanh airport by car, especially via highways.

But frankly, motorbike users, who still spend a lot of time accessing the airport - this is a population group that is interested in being better served.

Therefore, Dong Nai province is taking the lead in implementing the Cat Lai bridge construction project. The goal is to comprehensively solve the problem of traffic connection, making it easier for people from different places to travel to the airport by two-wheeled vehicles, while simultaneously developing many other types of transportation.

Dr. Architect Trinh Hong Viet - Deputy Director of the National Institute of Architecture (Ministry of Construction) - shared that the Long Thanh airport project has been directed by the Prime Minister not to be delayed, with the goal of putting it into operation in 2026. Therefore, one of the top priorities is to complete the infrastructure serving the airport, as well as the expressways connecting the airport with auxiliary areas.

In that spirit, focus on developing synchronous transport infrastructure, including railways, roads and waterways, to effectively serve the development of Long Thanh airport.

With the feasible plan of the National Institute of Architecture, the leaders of the Ministry of Construction have approved the orientation of focusing on ensuring the connection between urban areas and airports. Prioritizing investment in the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau expressway, reducing traffic pressure for the center of Ho Chi Minh City.

In the medium term (2025-2030), the orientation is to deploy a railway and urban railway system, connecting multimodally between Long Thanh airport (Dong Nai) and Tan Son Nhat airport (HCMC).

In terms of urban development, Long Thanh will become a breakthrough economic engine, applying the airport development model like Singapore, Dubai and other developed countries. In which, airport logistics is the center. The scope of development is not only limited to the Long Thanh area but also expanded, in the "twin urban" relationship with Ho Chi Minh City.

The project's development vision is globally connected, while enhancing regional connectivity along key axes including Bien Hoa (Northwest), Long Khanh (Northeast), Nhon Trach (Southwest) and expanding connections with Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City. The goal is to form an innovative urban area, attract investment and promote socio-economic development for the Long Thanh area.

The Ministry of Construction directed to focus on urgently completing key items in the 2025-2026 period, demonstrating a strong determination to promote connectivity in the Southeast region, elevating Long Thanh airport to become an airport urban area and transit hub of Southeast Asia.

As a bridge and locomotive, the ministry affirms to continue perfecting institutions and solutions to promote synchronous development.
