Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and seven others were killed when their helicopter crashed in a mountainous area of East Azerbaijan province on May 19.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has declared five days of national mourning, starting on May 21. Ceremonies were held in Tabriz, the capital of East Azerbaijan province, and in Qom, a holy city for Shiites, according to AFP. The bodies of the late president and officials were brought to Tehran.

On May 22, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei presided over the funeral in Tehran. Crowds gathered around Tehran University, where Khamenei led the prayer ceremony. Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah deputy leader Naiim Qassem also attended.

Huge banners were hung across the city, praising the late president’s sacrifice. From the university, the coffin was carried through Enghelab Square in the city center to Azadi Square. The late President Ebrahim Raisi will be laid to rest in his hometown of Mashhad, a city in northeastern Iran. The funeral will take place on May 23.
