Based on a simple Dodge A100, brothers Mike and Larry Alexander created one of the most stunning cars in the history of the American automobile industry, the Dodge Deora. This unique pickup truck first appeared at the 1967 Detroit Autorama and immediately stunned enthusiasts.
Unlike any other car of its time, the Deora featured an aerodynamic design with a monocoque body, low roof, almost completely hidden wheels and no traditional side doors. Although using the original Dodge A100 chassis and 6-cylinder engine, Deora was completely rebuilt from the exterior to the interior. The gearshift was moved to a position behind the steering wheel. The dashboard is redesigned in a futuristic style, and the overall shape of the vehicle is more reminiscent of sci-fi concepts than a regular pickup truck.
To enter the cabin, the driver must open the front windshield, which was taken from a Ford station wagon, and climb into the seat as if entering the cockpit of a spaceship. Deora's prominence was not just in its design. It became part of popular culture when Mattel selected it as one of the first Hot Wheels models in 1968, introducing Deora to millions of children around the world . Today, the Dodge Deora is a unique collector’s item, restored and preserved in immaculate condition. Although it never entered commercial production, it is still considered a bold design statement, where aesthetics, creativity and out-of-the-box thinking were pushed to the extreme.
The Deora was neither practical nor fast nor popular. But that “different” thing put it among the most unique vehicles ever made in American automotive history, and made it the most memorable pickup truck, even though there was only one.
