Great room for growth
According to the Vietnam E-commerce Association (VECOM), Vietnam's cross-border e-commerce exports reached about 3.3 billion USD in 2022 and could increase to 11 billion USD in 2027 if properly supported. Vietnam is currently among the countries with the fastest e-commerce growth rate in the world .
In 2023, B2C e-commerce revenue will reach 20.5 billion USD (accounting for 8% of total retail sales), and is expected to reach 25 billion USD in 2024 (accounting for about 10%). E-commerce currently contributes to 2/3 of the value of the national digital economy . It is forecasted that by 2025, B2C e-commerce revenue will reach 39 billion USD, creating a solid foundation for digital transformation and international integration. According to Access Partnership's report, Vietnam's B2C e-commerce exports are expected to reach about 296,300 billion VND in 2027. Thus, the room for cross-border e-commerce development in Vietnam is still large.

Mr. Trinh Khac Toan, Northern Regional Director of Amazon Global Selling, said that in the 12 months up to August 31, 2023, more than 17 million products from Vietnam were sold on the Amazon platform. The export value from Vietnamese enterprises through this channel also recorded an impressive growth of 50%. Not only Amazon, Shopee also recorded the strong participation of Vietnamese enterprises when more than 350,000 domestic sellers appeared on the international platform, introducing over 15 million products to the global market. Meanwhile, the Vietnam National Store on Alibaba.com is the "gateway" helping hundreds of Vietnamese enterprises receive regular orders every month. Notably, from April to June 2025, the number of new exporters from Vietnam on Alibaba.com increased by 48% over the same period last year, and the number of products listed by Vietnamese traders increased by 54%.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam, CEO of Lam Viet Joint Stock Company, said that the US market currently accounts for about 50% of the company's total revenue. Orders have been signed until the end of September 2025, showing stable purchasing power from this key market. In addition to maintaining traditional sales channels, Lam Viet is strongly shifting to online exports to reduce intermediaries and optimize costs. In April, the company successfully tested the export of 3 containers of goods via the Amazon e-commerce platform.
“The US market is the focus of the business. Thanks to our good grasp of consumer trends and suitable product design, we believe in our ability to conquer the market through e-commerce. In the near future, we will go directly to the US to negotiate with partners, share tax policies and continue to maintain a stable flow of orders,” Mr. Lam shared.
Leverage for sustainable exports
According to Mr. Bui Huy Hoang, Deputy Director of the Center for E-commerce and Digital Technology Development (eComDX), Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ), cross-border e-commerce is not just about opening an online store, but a long-term journey that requires businesses to master the digital value chain from data, logistics to after-sales and marketing.
Mr. Hoang emphasized that many Vietnamese businesses are still struggling at the first step – bringing products to the market – without a systematic strategy for cross-border operations. Small and medium-sized enterprises are particularly struggling with managing orders across multiple markets, lacking consumer behavior data and analytical tools to optimize competition.
In the context of rapidly developing technology, businesses need to be supported to improve their internal capacity to self-coordinate and optimize all international e-commerce activities, instead of just "participating" without being able to "master". "Vietnamese businesses need to shift from a platform-dependent mindset to proactively approaching the global market, if they want e-commerce to become a lever for sustainable growth," Mr. Hoang emphasized.
From his experience in supporting businesses, Mr. Hoang said that the biggest weakness of small and medium enterprises is the lack of capacity to coordinate international logistics and optimize e-commerce operations. Currently, eComDX is coordinating with many global e-commerce partners to pilot models of exporting goods, creating a foundation to expand opportunities to international markets for Vietnamese businesses in the near future.
Mr. Bui Trung Kien, Vice President of the Vietnam E-commerce Association (VECOM), also said that cross-border e-commerce is becoming an important pillar to promote Vietnam's export activities. To export on cross-border e-commerce, Amazon's representative also said that businesses should start by carefully researching the market, choosing the right products that consumers need, investing in quality and building a brand from the beginning to create a sustainable business foundation on the international market.
According to Decision 645/QD-TTg, e-commerce is a pioneer in applying digital technology, modernizing production - distribution and promoting exports. However, to effectively exploit this channel, businesses need to master the entire digital value chain: from data management, logistics, marketing to payment and after-sales services. The Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy (Ministry of Industry and Trade) is implementing many programs to support small and medium-sized enterprises, perfecting institutions, developing digital infrastructure, promoting smart logistics, cashless payments and applying AI in cross-border e-commerce.
A key upcoming activity is the Vietnam E-commerce and Digital Technology Application Forum 2025, taking place from September 4-6, 2025 in Ho Chi Minh City, within the framework of the Vietnam International Sourcing 2025 event. The forum focuses on four areas: e-commerce and cross-border e-commerce, logistics infrastructure, digital technology solutions for businesses and digital financial solutions. With the participation of more than 300 international business delegations, the event promises to be an opportunity to connect, share solutions, expand exports and attract investment.
Currently, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has developed a Master Plan for the development of national e-commerce for the period 2026-2030, with the orientation of bringing "Made in Vietnam" products to the global market through digital channels. According to Ms. Lai Viet Anh, Deputy Director of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy, the focus of the plan is to improve the capacity of small and medium enterprises, as well as domestic manufacturers, helping them master e-commerce tools to promote exports and expand international markets. Vietnam's deep participation in new-generation FTAs also opens up great opportunities for businesses to exploit cross-border e-commerce as an official export channel, saving costs and being highly effective.
