Depay shines in the national team. |
The Netherlands got off to a flying start in their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a 2-0 win over Finland in the early morning of June 8. Goals from Memphis Depay and Denzel Dumfries earned the team three valuable points.
The Netherlands took the lead after just six minutes thanks to a mistake by the Finnish defence. Depay quickly took advantage of the opportunity to open the scoring. In the 23rd minute, Dumfries increased the gap with a precise volley from Cody Gakpo's cross, sending the ball into the roof of the net.
The first goal helped Depay reach the milestone of 48 goals in his international career. The former MU and PSV star is only 2 goals away from equaling the record of the greatest scorer in the history of the national team, Robin van Persie (50 goals).
In March, Depay also reached the milestone of 100 appearances for the Netherlands. He is behind famous former players such as Edwin van der Sar (130), Frank de Boer (112), Rafael van der Vaart (109), Daley Blind (108), Giovanni van Bronckhorst (106), Dirk Kuyt (104), Robin van Persie (102) and Arjen Robben (101).
With the recent victory, the Netherlands is ranked 3rd in Group G with 3 points after 1 match. Leading the rankings is Poland, who won both of their first 2 matches, followed by Finland, who have 4 points after 3 matches.
The Netherlands will continue their qualifying journey with great determination, and fans are expecting a ticket to the 2026 World Cup for the "Orange Storm".
