On August 16, Mr. Pham Xuan Quang, Chairman of the People's Committee of Mang Ri Commune, Quang Ngai Province, said that the locality has requested the Transaction Office of Tu Mo Rong Social Policy Bank to postpone and extend debt for households with Ngoc Linh ginseng damaged by storm No. 3.

According to Mr. Quang, in the locality, storm No. 3 damaged 26,486 Ngoc Linh ginseng plants managed by people and organizations with a value of about 12.5 billion VND. Of which, 189 households suffered damage with more than 24,600 ginseng plants.

Identifying that support resources are still limited, recently, the commune has focused on giving priority to early assistance to poor households and households in difficult circumstances who have suffered damage.

Through screening, 67 poor and disadvantaged households borrowing capital from Tu Mo Rong Social Policy Bank had more than 8,300 ginseng plants damaged, with an estimated loss of about 3.6 billion VND. To help these 67 households, the Commune People's Committee mobilized forces to support the cleaning of ginseng gardens, and at the same time called on businesses and benefactors to support more than 3,300 seeds and 500 ginseng seedlings worth about 530 million VND to restore production.

Mr. Quang said that the initial support from the locality could not help people completely restore their ginseng gardens. While many households had sold their buffaloes and cows and borrowed money from banks to build gardens, the ginseng was now damaged and their livelihoods were lost.

“Debt forgiveness and debt extension are necessary to give people a chance to restore production. The commune is currently waiting for the Social Policy Bank to come down and appraise and will send staff to coordinate to speed up the debt forgiveness and debt extension process for people,” said Mr. Quang.

Previously, as SGGP Newspaper reported, storm No. 3 destroyed many roads, damaged many houses and caused damage to Ngoc Linh ginseng gardens of 189 Xo Dang households.
