Benefits of Brackish Water Shrimp Farming Project
The Project on Developing Brackish Water Shrimp Farming for the period 2023-2025, with a vision to 2030, has been implemented in a number of key shrimp farming localities in the communes of Tran De, Cu Lao Dung, Long Phu, Hoa Tu and Khanh Hoa Ward ( Can Tho City). To support people in the above localities in developing sustainable brackish water shrimp farming and reducing seasonal investment costs, the Project Management Board has deployed support models for farming households.
Brackish water shrimp farming is a key economic sector of Soc Trang province (old), now Can Tho city.
Mr. Duong Thanh Can, Long Phu commune, shared: “I have been raising shrimp for decades and have converted the model from earthen pond farming to high-tech shrimp farming for more than 10 years. Shrimp raised using high-tech processes develop very well, grow quickly, and control diseases on shrimp, so the productivity is much higher than that of earthen pond farming; shrimp can be raised in many crops a year, bringing in a good source of income. I also received support from the Management Board of the Provincial Brackish Water Shrimp Farming Development Project in terms of shrimp breeds, shrimp feed and farming techniques, helping to reduce part of the investment costs and increase profits after each shrimp farming season.”
Mr. Ngo The Vinh, Tran De commune, said: “I have 4 hectares of shrimp farming, with 7 high-tech shrimp ponds, each pond has an area of 1,200-1,500m2. Shrimp are raised 3 times a year, the yield of shrimp is 4-5.5 tons/pond/crop, the average shrimp output per pond is 12-15 tons/year, the profit is about 300 million VND/pond/year. Up to now, I have been involved in shrimp farming for more than 15 years and thanks to the support of the industry specializing in farming techniques, I have successfully raised shrimp”.
“Especially this year, the Provincial Shrimp Farming Development Project has supported me with shrimp fry, shrimp feed and shrimp care techniques, which has helped me reduce part of the investment cost for the farming season. The number of shrimp fry supported by the Project has been raised for more than 60 days and is growing well. It is expected that the shrimp will be harvested after 90-100 days. I hope that the Brackish Water Shrimp Farming Development Project will continue to be maintained in the coming time so that brackish water shrimp farming can develop sustainably,” Mr. Ngo The Vinh shared.
Sustainable direction
According to the Brackish Water Shrimp Farming Development Project, by 2025, the brackish water shrimp farming area of the province will reach 57,000 hectares, including 1,500 hectares of super-intensive shrimp farming model, 40,500 hectares of intensive and semi-intensive shrimp farming model; 15,000 hectares of improved rice-shrimp and extensive shrimp farming model. The brackish water shrimp farming output will reach 233,800 tons, and the city's export turnover will remain at 1 billion USD.
To achieve the above results in 2025, the Project Management Board will build 45 shrimp farming models suitable for each production sub-region adapting to climate change; 100% of farming facilities/households will ensure aquaculture conditions and be granted pond codes for key farming species; consolidate and improve the quality of operations of 20 cooperatives to achieve VietGAP certification and develop cooperation and association models based on organizing small-scale production facilities, dispersed into cooperatives and cooperatives to create large, concentrated raw material production areas. At the same time, create conditions for connecting businesses to access and sign contracts to provide farming services and consume products directly with cooperatives and cooperatives, to reduce production costs and increase income for both farmers and businesses.
Ms. Quach Thi Thanh Binh, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City, said: “In order for the brackish water shrimp farming development project to be successfully implemented, the Department of Agriculture and Environment will conduct the restructuring of some ineffective agricultural production areas to aquaculture. Experiment and build management models suitable to the specific conditions of each locality, high-tech application models to increase productivity and output value, in which priority is given to management models with the participation and supervision of relevant parties (management units, scientists, businesses and shrimp farmers)”.
According to Ms. Quach Thi Thanh Binh, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City also requested specialized agencies to strictly control wastewater and waste from shrimp seed production areas, concentrated farming areas, production facilities and shrimp processing companies in the area; regularly warn about environmental pollution, climate change, extreme weather events, especially during the rainy and stormy season so that people can proactively arrange production and respond effectively; strictly control diseases in farmed shrimp, especially in concentrated farming areas; develop and effectively implement plans to prevent and control diseases in brackish water shrimp.
Ms. Quach Thi Thanh Binh said that in order for brackish water shrimp to have good output, the Department of Agriculture and Environment will continue to research domestic and foreign markets, collect information on commercial shrimp prices to plan shrimp farming development and effectively exploit the shrimp product consumption market; encourage and support organizations, individuals, associations and unions to proactively implement trade promotion activities, develop and expand new markets for shrimp products; support businesses to organize controlled production according to the value chain associated with building disease-safe production areas and facilities, and building brands for shrimp products.
